Early morning carnage on both sides of the road as sand truck falls off bridge

Police and rescue services were called after a large truck trailer carrying sand hit the bridge crossing the Nakorn Chaisri River in Nakorn Pathom west of Bangkok.

Weeha Chaibang, 36, was thrown from his cab and taken to hospital after the leading part of his trailer and the cab smashed into a wall below the bridge.

Police said he was travelling towards Bangkok and probably suffered what the Thais call "lap nai" or a micro-sleep. It was raining at the time.

While the authorities were sorting all this out a BMW on the other side of the road heading towards Nakorn Pathom also hit the side of the bridge.

While the driver was waiting for the insurance assessor to arrive a Mazda hit the BMW and there was a pile up involving a taxi and other cars - seven in total.

Three female passengers in the taxi were taken to hospital.

Or it could have been the brakes !, but the falling asleep

at the wheel, seems to have taken over as the latest excuse.

Thailand. The hub of road accidents.

The practice of leaving vehicles with minor accident damage on the road for no reason than for insurance companies to apportion blame is difficult to understand.

To be fair Thailand isn't the only country where this is common practice but the cost in human lives and financial losses to other road users is unjustifiable.

Hopefully the assessor will say tough ! Nada , nothing, you employed a fool ! Sue him !

Damn good reminder never to stand behind or near or sit in a car that’s stopped on a roadway.

im Thailand of course this expands to being anywhere near the roadside as well!

i bet the drivers got a whopper of a headache n sore all over.

Nah, probably get a job as a tour bus driver.

All the other drivers crashed as they thought Pattaya beach was heading their way again????

That´s almost impossible.

Not for a Thai, it's not. They have an amazing way of defying the laws of physics. Last year a car flew through the top of a tree opposite my house and landed facing the way it had come. The driver apparently fell asleep, as they do, and paid the price of his insurance having expired the day before.

Worgeordie lets have it right, it wasn't a full sleep it was a micro sleep or commonly known as a cat nap

There must be a hell of a lot of Thais driving around the UK as there a constant road

safety campaigns warning about the dangers of driving when tired.

I had an accident a year or so back driving home after a Nightshift, went off the road tearing

off some of the heat shield and putting a few impressive scratches and dents along the side.

Fortunately I was in a scarcely populated area and didn't hit anything solid like a tree or

the numerous rocks that are roadside. I dozed off for only a split second and was woken

by the increased noise of going off road.

Lesson learned and now I pull over if I ever feel drowsy, even on relatively short journeys.

Good thing the police were already on the scene to control everything.  Just imagine what might have happened otherwise.

I drove thru Nakhon Pathom this morning.  There was also a tractor trailer turned over in a drainage ditch in the median of the road.

Nothing "Micro" about it!  Most of the population are members of the "Land of Nod Club".

What's that got to do with it!  Was the driver sleeping, or driving too fast for the road conditions!

I've never read so many excuses for an accident as I have in Thailand.
