Deputy Agriculture Minister promises to ban 3 herbicides this year

Deputy Agriculture Minister Manunya Thaiseth has given an assurance that three hazardous herbicides, which are widely used in Thailand and are strongly opposed consumer and civic groups, will be banned within this year.

She disclosed Friday that she had ordered a suspension of the granting of permits for, or registration of paraquat, chlorpyrifos and glyphosate, while a complete review of the use of the chemicals for agriculture is undertaken.

The review is expected to be completed this month, she said, adding that, personally, she would like them to be banned this month, but would have to take several matters into consideration, such as the amount of the chemicals currently held in storage.

'..... have to take several matters into consideration, such as the amount of the chemicals currently held in storage'

So if there's tons in storage Thai people continue to have these dangerous chemicals in their food for years.

If proven dangerous they should be banned immediately, no further discussion. What's currently in storage should not be a consideration in any way at all.

Only in Thailand.

What are the alternatives. Do they have a lasting impact, are they more toxic, are they less efficient, causing people to use more?

and replace them with 3 others, possibly even more dangerous to your health but we will only know after 15 years of testing and the accompanied lies from the maker. An emotive subject that wont go away.

Well they are totally banned in many countries.

Good if it actually happens, she does seem to be determined and has said publicly that it will happen !

Who will "Round UP " the chemicals on sale and in use?

Ban them TODAY, DESTROY ALL REMAINING STOCKS and stop acting like errant school children !

Nothing will change. The importers with the money will fill the Brown envelope a bit bigger. They do not care about people. Money 100% all the time.

The problem is with no similar safe chemicals the farmers will have to use 2 or more chemicals to replace the 2 herbicides on the list. This will increase the risk of farmers and produce getting contaminated. The other big problem is food prices. With the farmers having to apply 2 more expensive chemicals to do the same work their costs will increase and in the end food prices.

As for the near panic levels about Roundup, its all smoke and mirrors. The people taking the makers to court used the chemical not according to the label and should not be granted compensation. Its like someone buying a car then drive 220 km per hour and after making an accident they sue the car maker because they made a car that could drive that fast. So far none of the people granted compensation was farmers.

Most the problems with the 2 herbicides are for the people applying the chemicals and not for consumers. Paraquat is very bad when inhaled. Unfortunately some of the replacement chemicals like Diquat  and 2.4D is as bad. I my quest to replace these chemicals on my wifes farm I found out that very little alternatives exist for orchards. Some of the alternatives could contaminate our ground water or could damage our trees.

As for the pesticide on the list this product has been proven to cause problems to unborn children and must be banned asap. There are many alternatives.
