Huge shipment of poppy seeds halted at Laem Chabang

Almost 170 tonnes of poppy seeds, a Category 5 narcotic due to their use in making opium and heroin, were recently discovered aboard a ship docking at Laem Chabang Port.

 

Krisada Chinavicharana, director-general of the Customs Department, announced on Friday (October 4) that the seeds, valued at Bt25 million, were shipped from Afghanistan in 6,799 bags stored in six freight containers.

 

Labelled as quinoa seeds, they were bound for Myanmar.

 

The Narcotics Act prohibits the production, disposal, importing, exporting and possession of Category 5 narcotics without a government licence.

Isn't there a fast food hamburger that uses 'a sesame seed bun' ?  I'm sure some poor soul had a few such seeds stuck to the bottom of his shoes going thru some mideast hellwhole and was put in jail for it.

If it's just riped black poppy seed you can't use for drugs, but good for cakes or on bagels, buns!

But look at this bunch of idiots behind some bags of poppy seed.

Destined for the regeneration of tourism and "business" in The Golden Triangle??

Why would Afghanistan,supply a competitor with poppy seeds. 

and why bypass Burma and land the seeds in Thailand,must

have through Thai customs would be less vigilant.

Good on customs. Burma wasn't making bagels folks. Figure it out!

With the amount of US involvement in Afghanistan I would think the CIA know where every shipment of opium poppy seeds are headed for and can inform their buddies in Thailand of that fact.

Poppy seed bread. Yummy!

Strange story as poppy seeds are sold legally and locally in big shops in Bangkok and Pattaya  for many years.

From what I can tell from doing some quick reading, quinoa isn't anywhere high on the list of Afghanistan agricultural production or exports, if it's grown there at all.

 

Poppies, on the other hand, are an entirely different matter!
