A British dad jailed in Thailand for overstaying his visa has told of his horror after a fellow inmate died in his arms from a brutal beating.

Kai Isaacs, 35, from the Isle of Wight, was locked up in a filthy room with 150 other inmates including gangsters and suspected terrorists in the notorious IDC, International Detention Centre, in Bangkok.

Kai, a dad of two, told the Sunday People: “It was the worst three months of my life.

"In the IDC there were 150 people in the room, sleeping on the floor 10 in a row.

"It was hot, it stank, it was noisy, it was violent and scary.

“There were people from 47 different countries.

"There were suspected terrorists. Their own countries didn’t want them back so they had been there for years. They ran the place.

  • Agreed. Over stayers should be rounded up and deported. But it is highly debatable whether they should be treated like animals before they have an opportunity to leave these shores for good.

If IDC knows these gangsters are picking on certain citizens such as US citizens they need to at least hold them separately.  The guy who died in his arms after being denied water and bullied by the gangs was 41 years old.  Here is his obituary. RIP. Obituary of Rickey McDonald  He was a guy who was educated and was loved, have some respect.

One that puts it's own people first, one that cares about border security and one that wants a sustainable (that word again) population growth?

It doesn't care, bent immigration everywhere and porous borders.

Drugs everywhere pouring in and facilitated by the police/army

Violent crime everywhere that you only find in the Thai newspapers, in regard to Cambodians and Burmese

Seems to me that the murder is the real story here. Why isn't it being followed up on?

Most countries.  Look at the detention places in America for example.  You think prisons should be like luxury hotels, with individual rooms, tea making facilities, gym, x box games and free education and heal care... or wait.. that is what they are like in the UK.

You think the Mirror is a good paper to get factual news and true stories?

The UK has to adhere to certain human rights especially the very liberal EU laws.

I agree the UK should be far stricter but we should never stoop to these sub human Thai cesspits

No for much longer.  Once we are out of the EU, we won't be forced to have these laws... and the government can scrap all the human rights it wants.... won't be long before UK prisons will be worse than the ones here.

Nobody cares. A farang's life is worth zero

An a slight tangent I've know personally about 20 suspicious deaths (murders) in my time here and not one Thai has ever received a jail sentence!!

Sure, stupidity and ignorance is always included in a crazy choice like that. It also seems that he was a very responsible father who fixed such a nice holiday away from his child.

More stupid people than the foreigners that comes to Thailand and overstay is hard to find. They should just build a mental hospital between the borders of Laos and Thailand, and shuffle them all in forever.

despicable for a civil matter!

This all sounds very dodgy from the Mirror, he gets 9 days BUT spends 3 months in detention for not being able to afford a 4500 baht fine? Am I reading that right?

And as for British xenophobia against foreigners , what does this line......"a British DAD" infer ? What bearing does the fact that he fathered offspring have to do with him breaking the law in Thailand?

A civil matter? Would you like to elaborate on that? Is that according to your interpretation of the matter, western law or the laws of Thailand?

He sound much more likable as a person of high integrity and caring love for his child. Doesn´t he? I think it was very good to take that in the news, to show what a real peice of work this guy is.

did he expect breakfast in bed ....  now he's crying foul and expects to get paid and everyone feel sorry for him.

What about the embassies in this story?

1) Where is the American Embassy? Did they actually allow the outright murder of an American citizen by Iranians in a Thai prison to go without investigation?

2) Did the British Embassy actually tell this guy to turn himself in, knowing he would be put in these conditions, rather than urging him to get the money for a flight out and paying the fine at an airport?

Just chuck them on a Thai airways flight, not many people pay anyway, especially the Thai hob nobs
