Thais making life easier for Chinese tourists: Multiple Visas and online help starting imminently

Tourism Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn has revealed to the Thai media that his ministry has proposed visa stimulus measures for consideration by the economic affairs committee. 

 

If granted after a meeting next Tuesday this will mean Chinese tourists will be able to get multiple entry visas on arrival in Thailand. 

 

Initially this will run from New Year until January 25th - the date of Chinese New Year that comes earlier than usual in 2020. 

 

In addition Chinese people will be able to put their details into an electronic visa on arrival database before they commence their journeys to Thailand. 

 

This will ease pressure at visa counters at Thai airports as the data will already be in the system. 

 

Asked what measures are being considered to help Thai domestic tourism the minister said that they had received enough already. 

 

They had already got 1,000 baht on the Chim-Shop-Chai (Taste, Shop, Use) promotion and were getting 100 baht from the second round of "golden" stimulus measures that they could apply for today and tomorrow. 

 

Pipat's focus was clear - appeal to the Chinese to revive the sluggish tourism sector, notes Thaivisa.

Just so I'm clear, this weeks knee-jerk plan has reverted back to quantity of tourist rather than quality of tourist ?

 

The left not knowing what the right is doing, but who cares, we need tourism, grab the money, forget the westerners, they don't spend like the Chinese....lol 

The buffet restaurants up in Chiang Mai will be rubbing their hands in anticipation........

And this while Immigration makes it harder for people from Taiwan to get a visa.

There are numerous negative issues affecting the tourism industry in Thailand, very few of which are ever addressed. Rather than focus on things which will bring tourists back in numbers across the board, this smacks of a desperate attempt by TAT to get an increase in numbers, rather than focusing on improving the experience for those that do come.

I think it went right over the Ministers head that the point behind the question was that the extra Chinese were going to provide next to no benefit to the numerous tourism related businesses who are already struggling with low numbers of their traditional clientele.

Does TAT really need any desperate measures to increase numbers, they just make them up don't they? 

We need to open our eyes, the world is changing, just as the world economic centre is shifting from west to east. In a West in perennial economic and financial crisis, because it is stubborn with the nihilistic and materialistic ideology of Neoliberalism, it is committing suicide with its own hands. While in the East there is a lot of money circulating, especially in China. So it's no wonder that everyone is trying to get this slice of the cake. When they get the money in Burundi, I bet everyone will start studying the language of Burundi and open markets with that country and we'll go and kiss the ass of local politicians. 

American capitalists are used to say Business is business. So, now, Chinese people have money, all pull down their pants. It's more logic and simple than you think.

Ok. So in Chiang mai Chinese business means own resorts, own bus companies and own guides. Pray tell me, how Thais will benefit?

they will not be surprised by the database (control freak) request, very familiar to the Chinese, they have the same controlling system there

all sounds good unfortunately the Chinese know the bad reputation of Thailand accidents, was all over the news there, their economy is slowing down as well.....TAT shouldn't expect to many of them

Correctly is "German style concentration camps" in this context.

Clueless down to the bone. Instead of catering to quality they look only at quantity, this is not even shortsighted, this is just stupid.

If there's one nationality that probably won't benefit from mutiple entry visas it's the Chinese. Yes, I know there are a few exceptions but the vast majority of Chinese only travel for five days at a time and spend that time at one or two centres and very few are repeat tourists.

 

 

I am not sure i understand why 'normal' chinese tourists need multiple entry visas? They come here by group tours or with family, stay much less then 30 days to go back home and start working again.

The only people benefitting from this are possible long stayers and more scammers. In the meantime (farang) real spenders are being refused by the dozens.

Hardly knee-jerk, as all countries are continually creating new promotions. Thailand doesn't have to stop having any of its own lest TVF members decry them as "desperation." And then it turned out the quantity is also of better quality.????The previous "quality" is skint anyway and watching a lot of porn. Oh, well.

 But a minority of 2 billion still amounts to a considerable number, you see--and even without repeats. The new promotion is only for the long New Year holiday during which Chinese factories are closed 2 - 4 weeks.

 

So, not a bad idea, overall. If successful, could lead to another next year or even an extension.

That was the delusion, but it never really happened.  What happened was just fewer people showed up.  Today, they are looking at quantity, as that is where a business actually makes money.  Thai government still thinks it can lure whales away from Macau to come to Thailand by showing pictures of beaches, rubbing of amulets and chanting amazing Thailand.   Five years of military rules has made Thailand dull.

The West does not have "perennial economic and financial crisis". The West consists of developed economies that can never achieve the growth rate of developing economies.

Look at China. It started it's meteoric economic development adopting the capitalist principles the West's economic systems are built on. As it catches up to the West the growth rate slows down and in the will be more or less equal to that of the West.

As for the "because it is stubborn with the nihilistic and materialistic ideology of Neoliberalism" mumbo jumbo it's hard to figure out what it even means. Suffice to say that all countries who have achieved/are achieving rapid economic growth have done so using the West's capitalist principles.

I agree.

But even it is as what you said, it seems they are hoping for repeat visits.

 

What it does, though, it sets a certain message. Even more westerners will stay away. Why should I put up with busloads of Chinese, wars at every public spot, etc.? I think I will turn to other beautiful destinations.

Secondly, as we all know Chinese tend to favour Chinese owned hotels and restaurants. It's the same in other destinations in Asia. So why? Does anyone know?
