Scotland must be given new independence vote - Sturgeon

LONDON (Reuters) - Scotland must be allowed to hold another referendum on its place inside the United Kingdom following the crushing victory of the nationalists in the election, leader Nicola Sturgeon said on Friday.

 

The exit poll predicted that the Scottish National Party would win 55 of the 59 seats in Scotland.

 

"There is a mandate now to offer the people of Scotland the choice over our own future," Sturgeon told Sky News.

 

"There is a clear desire and endorsement for the notion that Scotland should not be landed with a Boris Johnson government and ripped out of Europe against our own will.

 

"Boris Johnson may have a mandate to take England out of the European Union. He emphatically does not have a mandate to take Scotland out of the European Union. Scotland must have a choice over our own future."

Independence will win in a landslide. Vote should be the sooner the better. Boris & England are on a suicide mission. I think grandpa who left Milton for Canada as a young man would want leave.

Sturgeon dont give a rats a++e about Scotland or Scottish people.

She just wants to be boss, and dragging Scotland down is of no concern to her.

Now before i get attacked for my comment, i am half Scottish, half English.

If scotland leaves the UK will be weaker still. Will be a nice show to see the UK crumble.

 

I dont like the EU but there is strength in numbers.

Are the people of Northumberland allowed to choose to relocate to south of the wall or have you summarily decided to exile them? 

Not a chance.. The SNP have blocked Boris on Brexit so expect the same serving back.

Only 1 seat left to declare and a very interesting one - Orkney & Shetland. I have read reports that the SNP made very encouraging others there, so even if they don't win it, a good showing there will dispel this stupid Project Fear nonsense about Shetland possibly attempting to secede from Scotland.

 

Even if they do win it, they will not be able to reach 50 seats and thus we will be spared the sight of Col Davidson skinny dipping in loch Ness - something we should all be grateful for.

As my other post stated, the English, yes the English tax payers are subsidising Scotland's budget to the tune of 64% and even so last year they had a further budget deficit of 8%.  But the good old SNP have the answer, introduce a tourist tax of £1 per night on tourists.  With the Japanese and French owning the whisky distiller's they say tourism is very important.  So why ruin it.

Bottom line, let the Jocks go

Indeed. This is a tangible challenge to the Union but will the SNP able to maintain that momentum and capitalize on it during the next year or two of Brexit related horse-trading? Johnson may get his 'deal' and the UK may well 'leave' but all the signs are that until all the t's are crossed and i's dotted on 'getting Brexit done' and the UK is truly standalone, his government will plead that they are simply too busy to address Indyref 2.

 

Must be a tad disconcerting for Johnson to realize that even before he re-enters No 10, it already has an elephant waiting in one of the rooms, eh?

Point taken, so if independence is voted for, let's have another referendum in three years time, after all, in your words times change....in fact why not have a referendum every year

On Sky news, Nicola Sturgeon said that the majority of Scots wanted to remain in the E.U. That seems to be the basis of her referendum call. When asked by the interviewer if she was confident that an independent Scotland would be accepted into the E.U., her expression changed. She said the E.U. is looking to expand. Basically, she is HOPING that Scotland may accepted. I think the Scottish should be allowed to decide their own future. But will they be given ALL the facts so they can make an informed choice.
