Pattaya: It's official - Pattaya tourism down the pan, Chinese off to Vietnam and Indians the last hope

A deputy mayor of Pattaya has said categorically that tourism in Pattaya is in real trouble. 

 

TAT attempts to instil optimism with figures about a New Year revival, published by Thaivisa yesterday, don't represent reality on the ground. At least that is what the start of high season suggests.

 

Manoch Nongyai pulled no punches in relaying confirmation seen in other sources of the bad news since the start of the so-called high season in October. 

 

Since the middle of that month until now occupancy rates at Pattaya hotels are down 20% on where they should be. Normally at this time of year hotels would be full, he said. 

 

He said there were a number of reasons for this: There is now an increased number of hotels but far less visitors and the world economy is playing a major part. 

 

The Chinese and Koreans are increasingly opting to go to Vietnam. He said 2% had already done so and with Chinese being the largest groups to visit Pattaya that is having a serious affect. 

 

Tourists in the current economic climate are watching their money more and travelling less in large groups.

 

He said there was one remaining bright spot - Indians. Indian visitors represent the second most number of visitors to Pattaya ahead of Russians. 

 

Indians are travelling thanks to their more buoyant economy and many are choosing to come to Pattaya in groups of 20 - 30. Many are men. 

 

Manoch repeated claims from other sources that Indians spend 10,000 baht a day - twice as much as the Chinese.

 

They are encouraged to come to Thailand by incentives, relaxed visa rules and often visit the kingdom to attend weddings, he said.

They always like to blame something/someone else rather than the fact that the baht is way to high for a lot of to afford to come to Thailand for a holiday

"there are a number of reasons for this" he states but conveniently makes no comment about the value of the baht....this is the major reason for tourist numbers being down....

Can you point with finger on map to show where is the bad world economy?

 

The only economies going to toilet are Thailand, India, China

It's more fun in the Philippines anyway

Instead you can stay 3 years on tourist visa without even leaving the country

I agree the world economy is no where near as bad as the gloom and doom that the "media" constantly harks on about! Problem is the massive "social divide" continues to increase, when the economy prospers the majority of the riches go to the few who already have most of the money anyway!

India and China are still highly developing countries with high growth rates, down a little for sure (.2%~) but they are busily developing their internal markets and services, Thailand as usual doesn't give a dam about this sector, preferring to keep the lower classes in servitude & poverty.

Incredibly, Indian Tourist spend has doubled in the space of a week, wasn't it 5000 baht per day ?

Maybe they mean per group of 20 ?

Of course, the other issue is education!

They seem to equate numbers of Indians and Chinese with value!

It seems that they manage to recognise that 12 Indian tourists are more than 10 Indian tourists (and that's about as far as their math skills go), but the concept of mutiplying 10 Western tourists by $1,000 per week is beyond them.  Extend that to ex-pats who live here and you can begn to understand that this is simply a little math problem!

Keeping the "lower classes" in servitude & poverty isn't so.ething specific for Thailand, you will see that this happens all over the world.

I'll never move back to Thailand to live. Holiday maybe and that's only because my wife wants us all to go as for me I would like to visit Vietnam, Burma and visit Hong Kong again but live no again in Thailand NO WAY!

Wouldn,t it be great if the Indians all went to Vietnam ? Only then might there be hope ???? This may sound racial, but I have only ever seen Indians urinating in the MIDDLE of the street, and washing their underwear in the hotel swimming pool ???? All the other races appear to rise above this behaviour.
