Video: Farang goes viral dancing to Thai music at a funeral

55p.jpg

Thai caption: Hang on buddy! This is a funeral

Thai social media was abuzz after a man posted a video of a foreigner dancing to Thai music at a funeral.

Tnews suggested that once he heard the rhythms the man couldn't stop his feet from doing the talking. They reckoned he didn't realise that it was a funeral.

Poster "Korn" thought the fast paced sound may have been responsible. He suggested that music crosses cultural divides and Thai music is as good as anywhere!

The video was filmed at Wat Tapotharam in Sri Racha, Chonburi.

More than a quarter of a million people had viewed the footage that had been shared 4,200 times.

The man is no Fred Astaire that's for sure...As long as it doesn't come across with a headlines of a 'farang mocking Thai funeral tradition' with this dance...

at least he didn't add more pelvic thrusts, than the allowable prescribed limits...

Let the competition for guessing his nationality start.  ????

From his dance moves, I get the feeling he either lives here, or has been here many times.  If so, he should know he is not dressed appropriately for a temple.  He also looks a little unsteady on his feet as well, and not from the dancing.  He may have been intoxicated.

In the clip, we can't see what he is seeing, but you can see the chairs laid out for a gathering, but rather than keep a low profile and let the Thai's do their thing, and just observe, this guy draws attention to himself.

Depending on how the Thai's take this clip, he may get some attention from authorities.

Like many things that go viral on the internet, you either become famous, or arrested, or both.  ????

When I see this bad behaviour and disrespect to Thai culture, tradition and people I truly feel ashamed being a person of the caucasian race.

Am pretty sure this would not go down well with those attending the ceremony, and not just because he is a foreigner,

Around 2 years ago while on a shopping trip away from the village, my wife got a call from her brother who was the head monk at the local temple. He was pretty upset and asked the wife to come and collect their step mother as she was dancing to the funeral music.

It was a particularly well known villager who had died which meant the place was packed. Of course we were too far away to assist, and later the wife said she was glad she didn't have to show her face and extract the MiL. Her brother lost face and there were many angry for a few days, the story being 'the talk of the steamy' for a while, but no real harm done.

I have to be honest the thought of her 75 year old stepmum (who I should add is pretty much permanently drunk) dancing at the funeral made us laugh all the way home.

The 'dancing's even more painful than the music.

Far from it. I've been to 2 Thai funerals and got the impression that I was an honoured guest. I think Thais get kudos from having a farang at the funeral. Once the alcohol flows you can see more raucus behaviour than this. The Thais would have loved it.

Only negative is that he was a bit under dressed. Makes me wonder if he was just visiting the wat and came upon the funeral.

The party after the burning  drink gambling then maybe dance after alot of whisky.somehow the Thais have other things to worry about than one farang.where is my next drink or card bet

I get the feeling that the funeral was for HIS wife lol.

Also, buddy has definitely indulged in a few whiskeys. Seemed awfully wobbly to me

When the geezer hacks the legs off the coffin I tend to throw some shapes also but that could be just going weak at the knees????

I went to a ceremony to celebrate , I think, 100 days after a death.  The main road through the village was closed off; police in attendance; lots of alcohol; lots of dancing (me included and much appreciated by my adoring public) and a troupe of dancing GIRLS whose moves were much celebrated by me and the other Thai dancers (mainly men.)

Hold on a minute. There are alot of valid reasons for loathing the white race. Many are very real and some of our historic atrocities are horrific. But this? He is just some guy feeling the music. I would not presume that the Thai people present found it disrespectful. Thais have a different concept of death than most of us. They probably found him amusing. Or thought he was a fool. Who knows?

How deeply have you studied the Thai culture and it's traditions? What kind of expertise comes along with these rather harsh presumptions?

There are plenty of places in the world, including in Thailand, where dancing at a funeral is totally acceptable. As stated above, "loud music, alcohol and gambling" are also common at Thai funerals. There are bigger battles...

Agreed.

Look drunk or maybe on drugs? The fat farang who walks by and talks to him also dressed inappropriately.

So embarrassing when Thai people think all farangs are like this.

Funerals are not just occasions of sadness and solemnity in many cultures but also occasions of celebration as the departed is off to a better life, a spiritual realm or another dimension... the sadness is for those left behind...

Can't see many Thais in the seats. Probably all involved in that other Thai funeral tradition: playing cards!

his feet are dirty. can't he wear a decent pair of shoes so it does not look like his feet are dirty?
