A former trolley pusher at Suvarnabhumi airport has admitted stealing a bum bag from a US tourist who was having a snooze while waiting to board a flight.

The Thai thief had been sleeping at the airport for two months living off scraps of food tossed out by tourists.

Tourist police chief Lt-Gen Chettha Komonwatthana and airport officials announced the arrest of Suchart "Boy" Sawatdee, 41, yesterday.

On Sunday the authorities had been contacted by an American called John Felton, 30, who was resting on some seats on the 3rd floor of the airport outside "Lee Cafe" before getting a flight.

His bags were on a trolley with a bum bag left on top of the pile. He fell asleep.

Mr Sawatdee was caught on CCTV coming down an escalator from the fourth floor before taking the bag.

He was picked up later that evening at the Airport Link station.

He admitted taking the bag. Inside were the tourist's passport, valuable items and cash. He used the money to buy a phone because "everyone else has one", reported 77kaoded.

Investigators discovered that he had been sacked at the end of 2016 from his employment as a porter. He had been drinking on the job.

In the last two months or so he had been sleeping at the airport on the 1st floor living off food discarded by tourists.

He was charged with theft from an airport and handed over to the airport police.

How many of airport sleepers like him live in that place or was he the only one?

Does anybody care?
