A New Zealand national, Marc Ryan, aged 37, was arrested on Friday (December 27) at Bangkok Get Fit cycling studio in Sukumvit 26 for working without a permit, said Immigration Police chief Lt-General Sompong Chingduang. Ryan is a biking coach and a former Olymic champion.

Earlier, police were informed that foreign coaches were instructing clients at the studio.

Police found that Marc entered Thailand on a tourist visa and had not applied for a work permit.

The coach was charged with working illegally in the country and transferred to the custody of Immigration Police.

if he wanted to stay in Thailand should have applied at lest for a work permit.except he  chose to be on facebook and do it that way.easy for the police to catch anyone, just look on FB and see who is promoting themselves

Have to have a name to search for first, and not all persons are on FBook

I dont think that it would have been possible for him to get a work permit for doing the job that he was doing

Depends, in many cases the job title can be the key to getting the permit, e.g. 'manager of coaches' or something similar.

Foreigners who engage in work without a Work Permit can be punished by imprisonment of a term not exceeding five years or a fine ranging from 2,000 Baht to 100,000 Baht – or both. Any foreigner who violates the conditions of his work as described in his Permit can be punished by imprisonment of a term not exceeding three months or a fine of up to 20,000 Baht.

Foreigners who do not have their Work Permit with them while working can be punished by imprisonment of a term not exceeding three months or a fine of up to 10,000 Baht.

An employer who permits a foreigner to work in his compnay without a Work Permit or to act in violation of the nature of the work specified in the Permit can be fined from 10,000 baht up to 100,000 baht.

Besides that, anyone committing a crime in Thailand can be blacklisted on a case-to-case basis, that means he has to leave the country and is not permitted to re-enter, even as a tourist.

If memory serves, changes in the law in 2018 or 2019 eliminated the prison time for work permit violations.

Snitch!!!

My thoughts too, this seems too complex to only catch a spinning coach, the poster makes it look he was running a drug cartel or human trafficking scheme. He clearly upset someone big time.

The penalties listed here are out of date. They were repealed by Decree in March 2018 and replaced with lower financial penalties and they no longer include imprisonment.

And the owner of the business gets away scot-free for employing someone without the required documents.

It's a two way street, hit the employers too!

Have they nabbed that gang of Nigerians who work illegally selling cocaine from outside Spankey's bar in Sukhumvit Soi 13 yet?

Or maybe the have work permits for that already?

Or maybe the coach wasn't contributing to their salaries?
