Does anyone know of a company that sell grass ( Turf ) in the northeast ?.

Water is not a problem we are right beside the Mekong

Well NiwPix, you have mentioned my name and so I had better respond. I am not an expert in turf grasses but rather pasture grasses and pasture seeds. But I have been mowing lawns for over 60 years and can say I know a little about turf grasses. 

 

There are only two turf grasses that one can buy easily at selected garden centres in northeast Thailand, Zoysia matrella (Yaa Nuan Noi) and broadleaf carpet grass (Yaa Malaya). Planting at this time of the year is actually a good time if one has plenty of water. The weather is fairly mild and so the newly laid turfs do not get stressed out. By the time the really hot weather and heavy downpours of rain occur, the grasses are well rooted and established.

 

Prepare the soil well. Broadcast agricultural lime and work in good topsoil and cattle manure before laying the turfs down. Stamp down the turfs hard so the roots get good soil contact straight away. 

 

In late November we laid down Zoysia turfs around our new seed warehouse and lab on the outskirts of Ubon city. I took some photos this morning and you can see that the grass is looking healthy and strong after six weeks. We water every morning using underground water. Not too much and not too little. This weekend I will give the grass a trim, cutting high, with a lawn mower. The trees were planted at the same time.

 

 

Why buy it? Just overlay your garden with top soil from the rice fields and stand back. Anything that grows you just mow. Eventually the weeds die and the grass will come naturally. Simple innit?

If you do that, what you will get is a lawn full of love grass (yaa-chaochu) Chrysopogon aciculatus. The prickly seeds stick to your shoes and socks and can penetrate your skin and in some cases cause extensive ulceration.

Those things are real buggers  almost as bad as jumping out of bed  barefoot on to an upturned UK plug !!!

All down to knowing when to mow. And the thing that's best about it is that I stop cutting in November let it die back and I get a lush lawn come the rains 6 months later. I have about a Rai of lawn area so I couldn't turf it. So doing what I did is the next best thing.

So you only have a lawn six months a year! not my idea of the perfect garden, we have about 2 Rai of lawns, for 6 months of the year they need minimum care, but they do need watering to maintain! We laid the "turf" ourselves, not a huge job and have greenery and dust free year round.

I choose not to water between November and May due to shortages in the water supply. If I choose to water I too would have lawn for 12 months of the year. I'm not the selfish kind that would wash his car during a drought just for appearances.  How sad you can't live without a lawn for 6 months of the year. What will the neighbours think? And who's to say what's 'perfect'.

I'm insulting? You explained the facts about having a lawn all year round and I responded. Now you sarcastically wished me a 'lovely day' knowing full well you didn't mean it. A little hypocritical of you there.
