The Chinese Spring festival (the Chinese New Year) is coming up. 400 million people will travel home to their parents during this period. The Chinese government cannot stop this from happening.

This situation could look very different in 2 weeks time (in China anyway)

Not to be alarmist but the number is actually much higher, something like 735m individual journeys will be made over the ten days of the holiday.

I was there during the SARS epidemic and the Chinese did the same as they are doing now, hide the facts until it was spread out and out of control

There are hourly bulletins from the health ministry coming out of Chinese media. Even the President is on TV keeping information flowing.

when was the virus first detected? how long did it take the government to start to "seriously" act?

Indeed... they [the airports] should be scanning (for people with elevated temperatures) upon departure and arrival.

Scanning arrivals is flawed approach, anyone infected of a dangerous illness has already spread it to others on a flight !!!

Well it also will tell you who might have it, AND who was exposed on the plane they traveled on. It is not the best possible approach, but quarantining all air travelers, whether they can from China or not, just in case they crossed paths with someone Chinese is far too onerous an approach.

A whole helluva lot faster than they did when SARS broke out but, blighted by the fact that their poor performance on that outbreak lingers in the memory of most, they are doomed to the criticism of not having done enough in this instance.

Indicates nothing of the sort. He was transported to the 'mainland' under a one-off, supervised medical evacuation provision.

It's perfectly acceptable to boast your Thai-scepticism here on TV. You are at home in that regard.

BY the same token, there was no mention if the person had ever been in the proximity of someone who had been to Wuhan region. Like a Chinese person maybe?

What part or primary function of a "specialised seaplane" do you not understand?

Thai scepticism by saying The Sun is not a reliable source of information? I admit, I have never checked who really owns The Sun.

Bless! The Sun even mentions that he appeared on Corrie (Coronation Street) and Hollyoaks!

Anyone giving the remotest credence to this drivel should realize that the British Press has taken up the mantle of generally being utter garbage, previously held by the USA supermarket tabloids.

Another classic line is this one:

“Anyone travelling to Asia I would say to you, get a mask. Everyone here is wearing masks, there are people coughing everywhere"

Methinks there might be other reasons why people are wearing masks here!

The time line is further up the thread.

Get well soon lad, I was told the other day in China they are screening people at the airport,

The Chinese are now screening passengers on the planes (especially those from Wuhan) before allowing them to disembark.

"The Sun even mentions that he appeared on Corrie (Coronation Street) and Hollyoaks!"

They're not suggesting it's all an act are they?

As this thread is somewhat redundant now that the person in question does not appear to have the suspected virus and is now being treated in the intensive care unit Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok.

Please follow this thread in Thailand News.
