The best available protection against the recently identified coronavirus 2019-nCoV might be kariyat, an herbal remedy that’s been used in ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years.

Dr Pakakrong Kwankhao, head of Chaopraya Abhaiphubejhr Hospital’s Centre for Evidence-based Thai Traditional and Herbal Medicine, noted that the virus’ symptoms resemble those of the common cold, “which can be difficult to separate from the common flu”.

“So, having a medicine for people to take care of themselves is important,” she said.

The bitter-tasting kariyat (Andrographis paniculate) is good for relieving cold symptoms as well as lung inflammation and strengthens the natural immunity,” Pakakrong said.

“It’s easy to grow and people can ask around for it since it’s listed on Thailand’s List of Essential Medicines.”

There are Ministry of Public Health recommendations for its use, though, she said.

“It can be used for children and the elderly, but we recommend against pregnant and lactating women using it.”

This Dr wouldn't be the owner of a very large kariyat farm by any chance is he?

Yes, an how much would you need to cough up for a gram of that "cure".

Reducing lung imflammation in a lower-respiratory situation is pretty key.

Would love to find out more on the chemistry here?

Getting all the people feeling ill to try this first before they overcrowd the hospitals in fear is a smart move. The truth is most all don't have the wu-flu. Start with something grown locally or purchased cheaply and give that a try. Half of the colds will go in a few days anyways. When that doesn't work, they'll head to the hospital.

The words 'might' and 'Thai Traditional and Herbal Medicine' worry me more than a little. I think perhaps we should understand where and when this guy got his medical qualifications.

...and give the virus more time to do damage while you "give it a try"?

Yeah, can't see anything wrong with that...

Many people seems to forget that most of the times there are just no cure for virus born illnesses (it's not like bacteria and penicillin), just remedies that will help us cope better with the symptoms of the decease while our body fight off the virus.

And if you read the research that someone posted (it was done by people from Nigeria, Germany, US and Pakistan, and was funded by a Fulbright scholarship!), then it shows that this plant have some medical properties!

I hate when they talk about Thai things, and in this case one with some reputable uses and properties, and they don't give the Thai name. Luckily it was recognizable from the picture. Many people take ฟ้าทะลายโจร (fah talai jone) for sickness here and elsewhere. Whether it's applicable to CV is speculation at this point, as others have pointed out.

From the paper:  "used traditionally for the treatment of array of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, ulcer, leprosy, bronchitis, skin diseases, flatulence, colic, influenza, dysentery, dyspepsia and malaria", so pretty much a universal panacea.

No reference in the list to erectile dysfunction, but apparently it's "erect handsome herb", so I guess it helps with problems in that department, too.

Let him be a guinea pig and trial it personally? 15 minutes with the Thai taxi driver that has the virus is all that is needed for transfer of the virus.

But but but, TVF researchers have dismissed these research findings and will now rely on Western drugs, of which many have been derived from or copied from plants and herbs.

But never let facts get in the way when airing your knowledge.
