Western expats and tourists a drop in the bucket

Nonsense. What visas changed? Tourists go 30 day VISA exempt, how did that change?

Expats still need 800k

What HAS changed are the 3 embassies cutting the BS letters and the thousands of scammers given the boot.

Good riddance! I predicted that Vietnam wont want Thailands rejects and BOOM visa changes for June and desperately poor expats have yet another door slammed

The wealthier expats will have a wonderful life in Thailand and that's how it should be

"Nonsense. What visas changed?" I did due diligence here in Thailand before I decided to retire here in 2005, I spoke to expats and was told that all I had to do was go to the border for a stamp every ninety days.

The border is a nice drive of only about 200 Ks, so was good for a day out with my GF, now my wife.

Does that answer your question?

Well Yinn, you do have to admit that a great deal of foreign exchange (dollars/quid/dollars) finds its way to Isaan does it not? Regardless of the reason or the relative stupidity of the payors, werent their shekels worth about 9 billion baht if I recall correctly?

Thats an awful lot of scratch in an area where folks cal live on 1000 baht a month. So even if that fact gives an ego boost to the bwana types, shouldnt you be a bit more kind to those guys who chose to contribute a great deal to your country?

I can not understand some your word. Sorry.

But answer for your last sentance... They not contibute=“give” to “my country”, they give to sex workers in my country and recieve sex.

Is a deal, not charity.

They not “give”, they “spend”. They only spend because they want sex.

If they did “give”, I would be more kind.

Some question.

1)If 100,000 of old foreigner, eg Arab, went to USA and start marry young USA sex workers, you believe “USA” should give red carpet for them?

2)Should USA people be happy about that Arab come help the sex worker?  Believe it help the “USA”, or will they just think they have only helped/contributed to a sex worker?

3)Should the USA make visa harder for other people because the Arab marry the sex worker not like other country people?

4) Will the USA people give special respect to the Arab marry the sex worker, because he contribute to her?

5) Does the farang contribute to the sex worker in the USA, or prefer to contribute to sex worker in Thailand because is cheaper?

The OP talk about people overestimate some farang think wrong how important for “Thailand”.

I know that TVF have member who marry the sex worker. So I not be popular to say this way. The sex worker must thank you sure. But Thailand must

thankyou for what?

They do it for sex, not because have wonderful heart. Think with penis, not the heart. Do they help poor old man? Or only young woman?

Our culture is not make someone lose face. If I see a guy with a sex worker wife I will not say like this. Impolite.

Maybe that the reason the farang think it acceptable, and thai people think it ok or good. Because nobody will say to them.

But I say what I think. On TVF.

Sorry. It true.

TAT figures are available....Westerners still make a large percentage of tourists...what's the point of the post, I went to Jomtien immigration yesterday, was full of foreigners, not a Korean or Chinese to be seen....maybe the Chinese over estimate their importance...much ado about nothing really

Everybody welcome to Thailand.

Enjoy your stay sir.

You can see why the Thai elite have put a lot of their eggs in the "Chinese basket". With a massive population bigger than the European Union, and North America combined, and ever increasing wealth there is no doubt this trend will continue. Western expats as one of the comments noted are concentrated ever more in rural areas where they live with their Thai wives, and contribute to the local economy. I left Thailand last year for good, and I don't intend on going back unless its a short stint to do some shopping, or just visit for a week or two.

IMO they think that way because they buy the sex worker the house, pay for the sex worker kids, pay monthly salary to the sex worker parents, buy land, business etc for the sex worker.

The Chinese, Russian, Indian etc is higher number of tourists, but their culture is not to buy everything for the sex worker. Not stupid.

Usually this people come from USA (David), UK, Australia and Europe. Is famous in Thailand. (Farang)

They also believe themself “saving” the sex worker from sex work. So expect all “Thailand” to give them red carpet. But really is just a long sex work contract. Because they expect the sex worker to have sex with them.

If they really “save” the sex worker, they would give house etc and NOT have sex with them/marry them.

They see the Russian, Indian, Chinese etc NOT buy a house for the sex worker, so they believe themself more important for,”Thailand”.

But really the hotel business, tourism business etc the Russian, Indian, Chinese is more important.

And for business, factory and job, is Japan most important foreigner, sure. The guy who marry the sex worker never see this, because his sex worker not have the real job in industry area. So many job.

The Japan company give million job for million people to buy house themself. Is better for “thailand”.

generally speaking.

Sex workers in every city in Thailand. They are there for the Thais, any farangs are incidental.

I don't know anything about Pattaya. Go-go bars are not the favored venues for Thais, short-time hotels and shower massages are. Most massage shops at minimum will offer happy endings as part of the menu.

Don't kid yourself. Every Thai male I know is at it, married or not.

There is certainly a change, reason it seems empty in western bars/restaurants etc but busy at immigration. In CM immigration it is mostly asians now when I go there.
But I guess expats and tourists in general aren't that significant, Let's say tourism is down 50% it is still 'only' around 6.5% of their GDP. For expats it must be far far less.

Just because some guy or woman stnding in line at any immigration office looks chinese or sounds chinese doesn't mean they are from china. Lets ty Taiwan, Singapore, and some from Malaysia. You will also see alot of middle eastern folks or those who appear to be from that region in line at CM immigration. There is a hodge podge getting services there now days and no there appear to be fewer westerns but how do we really know on average spending a few hours at immigration over the course of a day in a year. Trying to equate some grade population shift on those few hours spent at immigration would be a fools game.

According to Thai police there are no sexworkers for instance in Pattaya. Do you mean we could not trust what thai police tell us. And are all women living as married or in any kind of relation sexworkers? If not, you are talking bad about thai people. Wonder why you hate them?

You might say as well sex workers who cater to farangs are incidental to Thais, most sex workers for the Thai population do not interest farangs

I am Falang, but agree with the topic title.

Expats are not that important here, and in the future will be much much less important.

I know it is difficult for some.  All the "we use to be treated like kings" comments.

Just guys who have been here too long and have no clue of current reality.

"I bought a house, a car, I take care of her kids".  God man, this country does not care.

And the percent of impact of this is very very minimal to the overall economy.

Falang are indeed a drop in the bucket.

If they all left maybe Leo and SIngha would suffer a little.

But, all those bars would soon be replaced by Chinese and other Asian countries.

In fact, they look forward to you leaving soon and taking over the Falang bars, areas.

They have pretty much have done this in some of the popular WS gogo bars/discos already.

If one day word got out all the Falang left the Pattaya Soi 7 and Soi 8 Beach road bars, Chinese and others would be replacing them big time.   For now you have your territory, but they want it.

Sitting, having a drink watching the sun set. Of course they want it.

And within 5 years, do not be surprised if it is all theirs..

Yeah I'm sure the Farangs all had a good heart back then and decided to pump the money into Thailand without asking for anything in return...

Get a clue out of this sentence for once please.

So what you actual is asking for is that farangs should give thai people money but not come to the country and maybe have a good stay here. May I ask why we should do that? Because you not manage to make your living good by your own or?

The Chinese are all trapped in China at the moment.

How many will be left, and available to travel by the end of the year is anyone's guess.

Perhaps most farangs live outside Bkk. It is after all a polluted, congested <deleted>.

In my area of Bangkok, last stop on MRT, I see maybe 2 westerners a day if I am out and about, and that is only if I am inside a mall, or catch them going in or out of my building. Teachers. No expat retirees I see living out here.

This morning my partner and I drove the motorway from Bangkok to Pattaya.  We did not pass a single tour bus going to Pattaya.  Not a one.  There were a handful going the other way back to Bangkok.  When we got to Pattaya, what we saw on the streets predominately were Thais,  expat farangs, some with their Thai wives, western tourists, lots of Russian families, and some Asian tourists.  I said on another post that Pattaya now looks like it did 8 or 9 years ago with the tourist/expat demographic we had then.  Traffic seems lighter, although some roads are congested due to all the road construction.  We did a quick stop at Marina and it was very quiet.  Thailand would be wise to treat its expat population and the western tourists it is still getting with a little more respect because Pattaya, at least, would be hurting a lot more without them.

I don't mind being a drop in the bucket. I do what I do, have a happy family life, I find life easy. I get along with Thai simply by sticking to my own business. No one gives me any problems. I don't know any Falangs either except a few I see if I decide to go kick a ball around.

What about actual tourists, they may not spend all their time here but they certainly pass through.

And actual expats? Id say a very significant number of them are located here.

The majority of the professionally employed population certainly is here.

Do you believe retirees huddled in a ricefield with thaivisa on an old laptop make up the majority of western expats in the kingdom?

I am in Bangkok now and I wish I was out in a rice field... save save save.

Trust me, the Thai government have zero interest in what a load of farangs have to say. Even if they did assign someone to monitor this forum, he would currently be asleep at his desk, texting his mia noi, or "monitoring" Pornhub.

It may not be a perfect situation but I can't help feeling that it is somewhat more dignified, respectful, and safer for the Thai woman than having to sleep with ten men per night. Of course, the elites have never cared about those Thais.

Only if you are part of the elite who own hotels.

The farangs that you Thais now so despise were pouring their life savings directly into the poorest areas of Thailand decades before the Russians, Indians, and Chinese were a viable market. They brought billions of dollars into Thailand at a time when that foreign currency was desperately needed to develop the country. It may not be nice to think about now, but their presence over more than half a century was a vital step towards the affluence you enjoy today.

Those "kee nok" expats were also your best ambassadors, endlessly evangelizing the Land of Smiles to their friends and families back home. Watching the military government throw away, in a fit of pique, Thailand's reputation as a friendly, relaxed, easygoing destination has been like watching someone shoot off his own toes one-by-one.

The idea that you could just replace that market, grown organically over so many decades, with one big market, the Chinese (or, when they began to lose interest, the Indian millionaires, or then the Bangladeshis etc etc) was insanity. It never had to be one or the other. I still don't understand why they didn't hang on to their established western market while also expanding into new markets. It was a trillion dollar mistake that has eliminated a genuine advantage that Thailand had over its smarter, hungrier competitors in the region.

Of course, neither you nor any Thai will ever admit that a mistake has been made. You will convince yourselves that the nasty farang have been taking advantage of wonderful Thailand, and embarrassing everyone by rudely complaining about corruption, or democracy, or virus statistics, or air pollution, or other impolite matters that reveal how lacking in Thainess we are. Good riddance to us, the Chinese will take far better care of the Thai people.

What's all this anger about? I don't feel like Thai hate me, or want me out. Sure a few may, but I don't judge this place by the few.

Are Expats leaving? Or is this just coming from those that can't get the correct Visa to stay here long term?

Honestly, if I was not married to a Thai, and likely younger then my 61 years, I wouldn't even be trying to stay in one place

If I wanted to stay in Thailand long term, I would figure it out and make it happen. My Visa here is damn easy. I report online, no TM28  TM30 not my problem. Three Cheers for Thailand!!!

Having said that, when I had to Travel to Pattaya for immigration once... or even in Hua Hin....things felt very different, cabs wanting to run off the meter, high prices, touristy....in Chiang Mai a Song thaew is way more expensive then Bangkok...all tourist...kinda like Times Square NYC if you are Tourist.

But thats life....10 miles away...its a whole new world.

Bingo that's what I'm talking about lol. Doesn't matter really because fact is TV expats begging for respect don't respect thais so it's hypocritical.

No negatives, to anyone who married a bar girl  but not all expats marry someone who worked in a bar. My wife, worked at MAKRO, before that Gourmet market. Were just regular people ya know?

I don't consider myself as saving anyone, but I do bring a retirement check here, and spend it here. I take care of my family and live life as a model non-citizen Retirement Visa Expat. I am neither treated with contempt or as a superstar.
