South African arrested on overstay - BMW smart car comes up trumps again

Thai media Naew Na once again praised Thai immigration and their "BMW Smart Car" after the arrest of an overstaying foreigner.

This time they referred glowingly to the "power of immigration".

The now infamous BMW smart car was on patrol in the area of the Kathu waterfall in Phuket.

A check on a foreigner there using the onboard diagnostics revealed he was on overstay of more than a year.

Mr A.W. from South Africa had outstayed his welcome in the kingdom by 479 days and was handed over to the Kathu police.

Naew Na quoted a Phuket immigration officer as saying this was all part of Immigration Bureau chief Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang's policy to rid Thailand of illegal foreigners.

They urged the public to continue to report infractions on the 1178 hotline.

Naew Na - whose reports on these cases are little more than templates - referred to immigration as "khiaw lep" that equates to having power or ability.

Stop whining.

If "they wanted us gone", they could just hike the financial requirements to qualify for extensions.
They probably do want rid of cheap charlies but you can't blame them.

479 day overstay ? Hardly a regular tourist.

This is relly interesting, especially given they were both parked at chaeng wattana both yesterday and the day before.

They're still waiting for the Indian millionaires. The virus thingy arrived at the right time, now they have something to blame for their miscalculations...

Why when they have the smart car to rely on.........???

What's "smart" about stopping a falang (probably fingered by a local snitch), asking for identification and checking him out on a computer database?

Elementary, my dear Watson Sompong.

Or are these "smart cars" fitted with sensors which automatically light up and emit loud blasts whenever they get within sniffing distance of one of those smelly falang overstayers?

Wow....amazing!

I think this makes 5 people that this car has found now in just 1 month.....such a valuable (joke) asset for Immigration.....

I suppose they did something drastic and technical like check his passport

Smart car acting on information received from 1178 the "grass-up" free call number that ANYONE can use?

If they want us gone, who's going to bring in the dollars, euros and pounds? The Chinese only bring the COVID-19, or so I've been told...

The Indians?

Just think how many smart tuk tuks (the same functionality if the driver has a cheap android phone) could have been deployed at the same cost. The tuk tuk can also operate in stealth mode something the smart BMW can't do...

If we want you gone. You will be gone. Sure.

You say even go jail before. But allowed to stay.

Behave, complete immigration document and enjoy your stay!

"They urged the public to continue to report infractions on the 1178 hotline."

Technically that's how they caught maybe all the over stayers?!

For a fact the helpless guy with a zimmer is caught at the hospital while he was checking in with his passport/documents, the hospital staff called immigration.
