I'm in big village/small city in North-east Thailand.

Changes: about 10% of people are wearing a mask. Tesco checks your temperature. 7/11 employees are wearing masks&gloves. That's it!

All shops are open. All business are open. Everything is open. People are going about their normal everyday life. Streets are full. It's only when I check ThaiVisa people are barricading themselves in the houses, raiding food stores and preparing for the end of the world. ????????????

From Pattaya: After 22:00 (to 05:00) everything is closed, EVERYTHING!!!! The streets are dark. Walking Street is deserted. Beaches are closed. From today, shopping malls just closed down everything except take away food. You can't buy clothes, you can't buy anything except food. It's not that people in other areas (than your little northern paradise) are "barricading themselves in the houses", but there is absolutely no reason to go anywhere after 22:00. It's basically a virtual curfew.

Mask wearing is just a farce anyway. Proper surgical masks (most others are totally useless) are unavailable, so anyone currently using a mask is just pretending as they are recycling it for days or weeks and not using it correctly. If anything, they could be harbouring covid-19 in their filthy recycled masks and spreading it around.

Considering that test kits are limited on a population basis, the mortality rate is most certainly a small fraction of what they are now touting.

Consider this:

In acute respiratory diseases: Normally 7% - 15% of viruses are coronavirus.

Dr Wolfgang Wodarg is a German physician specialising in Pulmonology, politician and former chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. In 2009 he called for an inquiry into alleged conflicts of interest surrounding the EU response to the Swine Flu pandemic.

What he says:

Politicians are being courted by scientists…scientists who want to be important to get money for their institutions. Scientists who just swim along in the mainstream and want their part of it […] And what is missing right now is a rational way of looking at things.

We should be asking questions like “How did you find out this virus was dangerous?”, “How was it before?”, “Didn’t we have the same thing last year?”, “Is it even something new?”

That’s missing.

Coronavirus is a generic term for many viruses; the challenge we are facing is a specific virus (and its mutations).

My friends who are recovering are not downplaying this virus; I doubt the dead people are, either.

Take note how you're also being lied to by the media.

First it was only the elderly dying.

Now it is teens and young healthy adults dying off quickly from this virus.

And it is not the flu.

So based on 621,626 confirmed cases and 28,658 deaths we get a death rate of 4.6%.

You would agree this is about right, maybe a bit out either way but not too far off where the true value would be?

That 621k figure only tells us the number of confirmed cases. The death ratio would be considerably lower if we knew the true number of people infected - which we probably never will.

Some scientists are asking why the death rate in Italy is so high and what Wuhan and Italy have in common. Air pollution is the common factor. Italy has a very high rate of respiratory ailments in a good year. The suggestion is that people suffering from respiratory distress due to air pollution all their lives are much more likely to succumb to the coronavirus.

So yes, I believe people who live up north will be more susceptible.

Perhaps ThaiVisa ought to be paying closer attention to the source of these kinds of posts, as apparently Facebook and Twitter already have.

Here you go again. All you're found is one source trying to rubbish another source. This is quite a common tactic in the media world... and your source is Wikipedia, which can be written by anyone. Shame on you!

The content in my link is given by 12 noted experts in the area of medicine and infectious diseases. How about debating the material rather than going on a quest to rubbish the source. You're only interested in winning an argument, and you're not doing a very good job because you're going off on tangents and even offering statistics to confirm what the scientists in my source are discussing and not debating.

As promised, another excerpt and thank you for the opportunity:

Prof. Hendrik Streeck is a German HIV researcher, epidemiologist and clinical trialist. He is professor of virology, and the director of the Institute of Virology and HIV Research, at Bonn University.

What he says:

The new pathogen is not that dangerous, it is even less dangerous than Sars-1. The special thing is that Sars-CoV-2 replicates in the upper throat area and is therefore much more infectious because the virus jumps from throat to throat, so to speak. But that is also an advantage: Because Sars-1 replicates in the deep lungs, it is not so infectious, but it definitely gets on the lungs, which makes it more dangerous.

[…]

You also have to take into account that the Sars-CoV-2 deaths in Germany were exclusively old people. In Heinsberg, for example, a 78-year-old man with previous illnesses died of heart failure, and that without Sars-2 lung involvement. Since he was infected, he naturally appears in the Covid 19 statistics. But the question is whether he would not have died anyway, even without Sars-2.

And who do you think you are to be making assumptions like that - that I'm not doing anything.

Shame on you!!!

I'm trying to help my wife's family in the Philippines that are much worse off than people in Thailand and very desperate, under even more draconian lockdown measures. And why assume I can even afford to help? Are you living in a bubble, totally unaware of what is going on around you? How do you know my personal finances have not taken a dive?

Do what you want.  I've suggested things that we can all do, whether rich or poor, regardless of where our relatvies live.
My point is that we can acknowledge the challenge facing us, and deal with it, or ignore it, until we can't.

Which I think is the topic of the thread.

I'm sure your friends will recover if you even have friends with the virus. Just in case you didn't know, lots of people perish from respiratory illnesses every year.

None of my friends have perished from respiratory illnesses this year, or last year.  Nor that I can recall.  Two of my friends have reported COVID-19 symptoms in a fairly clear sequence, and are fortunately well on the road to recovery.

See if it was me? If there was a risk I didn't really understand? I'd probably err on the side of caution, and make sure I could not be blamed for any problems later.  Maybe there's no old people in your village.

Staying at home, and taking it seriously.

I believe thats what one does with infectious diseases.
To get the infection rate down requires (in)action by everybody.  How hard is it to stay at home?

I don't live in a Thai village. I live with my wife in Pattaya. Our lifestyle has hardly been affected at all. The only thing we can't do now is go out for dinner - everything else is the same.

What part of helping my wife's family in the Philippines did you not comprehend. Are there not old people in most families? Trust me, whatever Thai people are going through right now is a picnic compared to what they are going through over there.

Lots of consistent reputable sources and reports re Zerohedge:

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/twitter-bans-zero-hedge-coronavirus-conspiracy-theory/

Quote

UPDATED ON: FEBRUARY 3, 2020

The financial website Zero Hedge is now barred from Twitter after publishing an article relaying a conspiracy theory that a Chinese scientist might be to blame for the coronavirus outbreak.

Zero Hedge on Friday wrote that Twitter had notified the site that it had violated the social media platform's "rules against abuse and harassment." That followed a report by BuzzFeed that Zero Hedge had shared the identity and personal information — including the email and phone number — of a Chinese researcher it claimed might know about the source of the virus.

The article, posted under the pseudonym "Tyler Durden" (the fictional character played by Brad Pitt in the movie "Fight Club"), was titled "Is This Man Behind The Global Coronavirus Pandemic?" It included a photograph of a scientist at Wuhan's Institute of Virology and suggested that anyone curious about the epidemic might want to pay him "a visit."

Conspiracy theory whack jobs, yes.  Legitimate news source, no.

That's it? No financial commitments to help anyone whatsoever... just staying at home? You came across as being rather virtuous. Surely you are doing more?

We do whatever we can; we can't expect people to put their hands in their pockets at this difficult time, and we should not boast if we can.

I am most worried about the migrant workers who will have lost their jobs already, and whom we won't see again

Thank you for reminding us about the disadvantaged in our society who are suffering mre than most

And you keep doing it. The material presented is genuine interviews by scientists in the field of medicine and virology. They had no idea where their interviews were going to be used. The material presented before is not a conspiracy theory at all, meaning that cbsnews is labelling it incorrectly, themselves offering fake news in order to push their agenda. Certainly you should realise that most mainstream media is rather biased.

Now there's one very important point that you totally missed in your fervour to find reports that rubbished the internet site I linked so that you had an excuse not to read anything.

The 2 videos that were presented on the website were links from YouTube videos posted by the doctor's themselves,

So now you can do us both a favour and watch this video that was posted by Prof Dr Sucharit Bhakdi on his own YouTube channel, which he personally set up about 1 week ago.

Consider the material rather than looking for an excuse not to.

Yes, indeed... yet you made the suggestion that I don't help, when in fact I'm doing a lot more than you are. In fact I sent money I can't really afford for a food package today.

You were the first who brought up the suffering of people and specifically elderly people, and now you choose to be facetious when I explain that I am helping people.

The disadvantaged I'm speaking of are people suffering specifically under draconian measures the government of the Philippines has implemented. The people lost their jobs. We are discussing the coronavirus pandemic and situations pertaining to it, not poverty in general.
