Uk Satnav System

Hi, I have been offered a good deal on a UK Satnav system.

Trouble is it only has mapping of the UK.

It comes with a 256 memory card so I was wondering how easy is it to get maps of Thailand onto the memory card so I can use the satnav here in Thailand.

Anyone done this before and/or know the cost of a good Thai map dataset.

Thanks, Andy.

The available maps for some parts of Thailand are apparently quite good, HOWEVER, I live up country and other than highways, the maps contain VERY little detail. Below is what searching came up with;

ESRI (Thailand) Co., Ltd.

The ESRI Thailand has an extensive geospatial database of Thailand, primarily for their professional GIS datasets called ArcData (50,000B - 7,000,000B). The company could easily provide a very detailed GPS map of Thailand without further operating costs but, apparently, the limited number of GPS users in Thailand doesn't attract the company's attention.

I wanted to go from Nong Hin to Si Chompu. The road map shows no roads except to go to Chumpae on highway 201 then north on 2153 to Si Chompu. There is a road that goes off highway 201 but it isn't shown on the road atlas nor does the Garmin show it. If a GPS is no better than a 200 baht road atlas, I don't need it.

You cannot just stick any map into any GPS device, it has to be formated for that specific device. Garmin seems to be the dominant GPS device here in Thailand.

Almost all maps are serialized for that particular device to prevent copying (only 90% sure on this.)

ESRI do sell Thailand maps for Garmin devices, not sure about other makes though... best bet is to call them direct.

I agree with Berty, get it locally to save you the trouble. It's definetly going to be more expensive, but it's definetly going to work.

Best quote i could get for the garmin map was 11200 baht, anyone do better ?

Does that price include yearly updates, if so, how many years? I was told that ESRI updates their Thailand maps on a yearly basis, towards the end of every year.

I bought a Garmin device from them which includes 2 years free map upgrades.

I've bought a UK Garmin and added Thai maps.

It means I have both UK and Thai maps, which is very useful when I am back in Blighty.

I bought the unit in UK for about B10,000 and the maps of Thailand were a further B12,000.

To buy the unit locally is around B31,000 and you don't get the UK maps.

Maps are updated about 1 / year, I can confirm this has happened with the unit I bought in Thailand about 2 1/2 years ago (its had 2 updates so far).

Based on my experience of using these two machines all over Thailand and in some of its most remote parts I have to say Gary is wrong.

Cheers

Gary ,

I just did a quick check of the routes my machine would give me from Nong Hin to Si Chompu.

First I asked it to give me the shortest route including unpaved roads.

It gave the following

201 to Khon Kaen 46908 So Po Ko rd

46908 to Ruen Rom rd.

Ruen Rom rd. to Klang Mueang rd.

Then I asked it to give me the quickest route avoiding unpaved roads.

201 to Loei 3137 Ro Pho Cho rd.

3137 to Loei 3006 Rural rd.

3006 to Nong Bua Lam Phu 3007 Rural rd.

3007 to 228

228 to Sukhaphiban 1

Would either of these represent the route you would have taken?

Interestingly neither of them take you close to Chum Phae.

When you tried a GPS it either had very bad maps (not ESRI) or you had it set up very badly.

Cheers

My Thai wife was my navigator and we actually stopped twice and asked for directions. I have no idea what the road numbers were and would never be able to find my way again if I were alone.

As far as the Garmin the guy was trying to sell it to me and could not find any route except going to Chum Pae. And YES, it is entirely possible that he didn't know what he was doing. Thanks very much for that information because it means there is hope for my area. It's also possible that the unit had an old map in it. In any case, I'm enthused again and will certainly take another look. I do enjoy driving through the boonies and have found that is VERY easy to get lost. My compass is not very helpful because the roads are quite likely to have MANY turns, all going in different directions.

Probably no need to buy it mate. There are many maps available on file sharing sites such as Limewire and kazaa. Just download it.

If you ever see Garmin thailand.. Let me know..

they have a shop in pattaya, the importer /agent is esri mentioned above

Read the post.. If you ever see the garmin Thailand maps on an online file sharing service then let me know.. The poster made it sound like they were easy to find.. I have serached high and low over torrents emule kazzaa limewire etc..

American maps and serials are available.. Thailand so far not found.

Hi

Remember there is so many different ways to spell in Thai, that is a big problem when you try to find a place, try Patong,,, it dont come up, but Pa-tong does, its like that everywhere you use the Garmin, you will get used to it,

it is good
