Cheap rooms on North Buakao

Recommended Posts

Posted

I'm heading back to the US but when I come back I think I will prefer the North Buakao area over South, where I stay now.

Can anyone recommend a cheap room in the 5,000 to 10,000 thb range around there?

Room can be thai style and even a fan room. I would like it to be a fair size, around 30 sqm.

5,000 to 10,000 a night is a "cheap"! room!?

I must be staying in right dives then...as I pay nowhere near that if I book a hotel for a few days!

It doesn't say 'a night' anywhere in that post.

Why don't you just go for a walk and check the availability yourself, Hal?

Most apartment near soi Buakhao northern end are smaller, 25 sqm in size. Soi Chalermprakiat 17 - 19 - 21 has many apartments in range 5,000 to 9,000.

Southern end of soi Buakhao are in general larger apartments than those in the northern end, so be prepared to downsize.

I "assumed" it was per night, as that is the normal rate hotels advertise their rooms for?

Everybody has their own perception of cheap, maybe a good idea if the O.P. gave readers and idea of what his perception of cheap is?.

Then people could maybe give their thoughts on cheap rooms in that area?

You do not say when you will be coming back.  Depending when you are coming back, you may not be able to get back into Thailand.

Also,  many of the hotels here may continue to remain closed, until tourism numbers start increasing to a level that at least covers operating costs, and that could be 12 to 18 months from now.

From the OP:
"Can anyone recommend a cheap room in the 5,000 to 10,000 thb range around there?

It's literally the 2nd and 3rd sentences of his 3 sentence post ! :w00t:

For the OP. You can get (small) serviced apartments in the area for 6-8,000 a month, but those tend to be on the small side (a double bed, maybe a small table and dresser, tv and small bathroom. No idea of the sq mt but it's got to be way under 30.

Friend of mine comes over every winter and rents a place for 5 months. Never usually a problem find an available one, but it mostly depends on where exactly you want to be. My buddy doesn't like being right on Soi Buakhao because all the bars can make for difficulties sleeping.
He usually gets a place a couple of blocks from Buakhao, on one of the sois leading off from Central Pattaya road. (He hangs around the North end of that soi as well.)

There are hundreds of places around there. Thai style, very basic rooms. Monthly apartments. Serviced apartments. Some have (crappy) free wifi, some have crappy Thai TV channels only.
Many will be too small to advertise on the internet, you pretty much have to walk in and talk to the manager. Best idea is to talk a walk around the area you want to be in, check a few places out (look how close they are to any bars so you can get an idea how loud they can get at night) and if all else fails, try looking one or 2 sois away from Soi Bhukao itself.

Or do a google map walkabout. Go into street mode, move up and down the soi and adjacent sois, note the phone numbers of places in the area you like. Use Line to call them and check rates and sizes and availability. The manager may even have some photos (wouldn't count on it though).

Fan rooms don't cost 5,000 a night.

There's loads of places up the sois off Buakhao, but as said you have to use Shank's pony to find them.

Im not being silly?

I still dont know if the O.P. means 5,000-10,000 a week or a month?

For 5,000-10,000 a WEEK can get a decent to a good hotel, with pool and air-con.

Conversely for 5,000-10,000 a WEEK, youd be able to get a good sized well specced room.

Whereas 5,000-10,000 a MONTH can get you any number of rooms?   5,000 a month though, probably wouldnt be very nice /spacious....As has already been said, its best to go "walkabout", around the area, and find whats best/most suitable for your own needs.

Im no rocket scientist...its just I  have no idea if the O.P. means 5,00-10,000 per week or per month.

Thanks for the advanced intel on the North Side. To be clear, I was asking about monthly rates. I plan to return in 1 to 1.5 years. The virus may still be around but hopefully on the tail end. The state of Pattaya will be anyone's guess.

A few years back my findings were similar, the rooms in the 5,000 to 9,000 per month range were quite small. There was a 1 bedroom for 9,500/month but it was tucked in a soi on 3rd road that wasn't a through street to Buakao.

I like that area around Treetown as it seems a nice place to walk around briskly for 5-10 minutes. But I suppose development has raised priced for mid sized places. Noise may also be a concern if they deploy boomboxes from time to time (they do this even on the South side a few days per year, I suspect for birthdays or big holidays).

You could well find a decent sized room for 10k a month around that area. There are literally dozens and dozens of rooms there.

I have the use of a house on the darkside. I do quite often book hotels in Buakhow, (L.K. Mansion..on Buakhow...about 50 metres from Klang.)

While I stay there, I walk around quite a lot (I mean around  the little sois off Buakhow).I see lots and lots of rooms there, I havent though, been inside any of them...it could well be worth a look inside a few of them though, then you could see how big etc they are...of course...you could also "barter" with them to get a better price, if you were to stay a certain amount of time.?

Not "far"! away (well right beside Big C. on Klang)....a mate of a mate, stayed in a room there...it wasnt much at all, I "think" about 5,000 a month (plus electric) it had air-con too....granted, it wasnt very big...and not in the location you wanted...he stayed there for about 6 months last year.

Its a lot easier  for you to look around the area of course...but you arent there now so you cant! How about just booking a cheap hotel there for a few days...then go and have a look around when you are there...

Good luck in your search....pretty sure you will find something...

Ive booked to go back this year...September to Christmas....cant see that happening now though! "Hopefully" early next year will be looking better.

A little early to be scouting for places if you're not planning on coming back for a year or so. Try asking again maybe a month before when you know you'll be coming back. Too many things can change in that length of time.

You could get a dozen recommendations for places to stay now and when you (eventually) get here find they've all been demolished and some new skyscraper is going up in their place.
Not too mention that owners/management change, prices change, availability changes.

As Welshguy mentions, probably better to get a cheap hotel room and wander around for a couple days in the area you want to be in and scout some of the possible places.

I used to do that, starting with my first trip back in 1993. Rent a hotel room for 3 nights, party, explore, maybe find a better place (maybe even cheaper) change hotels. Go to another city, do the same.

Eventually you find a number of options in the area you like and settle into one.

I haven't seen much change at all on the south side. A skyscraper going up on Buakao? Perhaps that was not the best example.

The point is taken that things are liable to change. I created the thread with the intention of previewing places now, before I leave. The reason is when I come back, I'll be in a more rushed situation to settle in and the early leg work would then benefit me. If a place or two is gone so be it.

Loads of new condos were built behind Avenues a few years ago. Maybe not skyscrapers, but any existing buildings all gone.

Absolutely best way to find a more permanent place.

My very first trip to Thailand (back in 1993), rented a hotel room for 3 days from a kiosk at the airport. Got there and found that there was a "sister" hotel the next block over that was almost identical but no swimming pool and half the price (and no "guest fee" which I'd just learned about).

Someone told me I should go to Pattaya - a pleasant beachside town south of Bangkok. I had no idea as I'd never heard of it before. They gave me a business card for a hotel on Beach Road right across the road from the beach.
Walked there from the bus terminal on North Pattaya road carrying my heavy duffle bag (with all my winter clothes because where I had come from was still in deep winter). I didn't trust the taxi guys after an experience with a "private" taxi in Bangkok and besides, the map on the back of the business card made it look not too far (especially to a young, dumb Army guy). I think it was at soi 2 back then. Maybe soi 3. Mid February I think and very hot.

Rented a room for 3 days. 1st night walked to the far end of Walking Street (as far as there was anything worth looking at anyways). Came back to the Marine Bar to watch the (fake) Muay Thai matches interspersed with some traditional Thai dancers and snake shows.

Met an old Brit at the Marine Bar who told me about a new hotel a short distance away, cheap and quiet. (It was the DayNight 2 hotel). Checked it out the next day, it was half the price of the place up Beach road. Checked out of the other place and checked into the DayNight 2 for the duration of my holiday (which was only a couple days more anyways).
No swimming pool or anything, but it was far enough from the nightlife that you could sleep at night, but close enough you would walk there in 10 minutes or so. Everything was new and they had a nice restaurant on the first floor.

The old guy was a Brit who was juggling 2 different girls and always looking for something more on the side. It was my first time in Thailand and I couldn't believe how he was able to snag all those hot women so easily. He also warned me about "ladyboys" and katoeys and what to look for. We'd been sitting at the Marine Bar late one night when I saw a large group of sexy women walking down the street. I pointed them out to the old guy. He looked over at them, looked at his watch and told me they were all boys and that the Alcazar had just closed and they were probably out looking to make a "little extra" income. That was when I first learned about ladyboys (and how to avoid them).

Every trip after that, I stayed at the DayNight 2 right up until I finally broke down and decided to rent an apartment (across the street from the DayNight 2 hotel) instead.
Even put my dad up there after I brought him over for a holiday !

I'd stayed for a night or two at a couple other places (like the Penthouse and another place that was on a soi that has since been covered over and turned into a bar complex). Always ended up back at the DayNight 2 (though by 2004 it was getting pretty run down and shabby again which was part of the reason why I decided to rent an apartment instead.)

You tend to "settle" into a place once you've found an area you like and a hotel/apartment that meets your needs. My buddy that comes over for the winter every year has been back and forth between 2 different places for the last couple of years. Stays at one, decides he doesn't like it and then the next year stays at the other place, then remembers why he didn't like that one either so he decides to go back to the other place on the next trip !
Because it's familiar to him, he kind of knows his way around the neighbourhood and it's convenient to places he likes to go for shopping and eating.

You'll never know until you look around and then you may find yourself pleasantly surprised by what you find (and kicking yourself for not looking around before).

Pattaya will be very different upon your return.

As another member suggested, get a cheap room for a few nights and walk around when you are here.

The area you though you would like to say in, may not be a good area to stay in 12 months from now.

Everyone but you knows he meant a monthly rate. You do not seem to have spent much time in Pattaya or mixed with any longstayers.
