Drug championed by Trump for coronavirus shows no benefit, possible harm in study awaiting validation

I have been prescribed to use Chloroquine by a doctor.  The prescription was filled in two different states in the US.  I heard Trump say we might try it.  The study quoted was not what I consider a real study.  When a real study is completed then we might know.  By the way the current scope of what is being forced upon people has not been studied for Covrise-19 either so why are we dong it?

By the way if I get a cold I will be taking my prescription in the dosage and under the instructions that I was given by a doctor that I trust.

I am not basing taking this on the fact that Trump suggested it.  Because he said that a lot of people are against it because they are anti Trump not on any factual basis.  I am going to follow my Doctor's advice.  Up to you what you do.

Is there any proof, any fact, that would lead to that statement? If not, it's just a sensless mumbling.

He is where he is because many many people voted for him and continue to support him. Amazing USA.

An old malaria drug touted by U.S. President Donald Trump as a "game changer" in the fight against the coronavirus provided no benefit and potentially higher risk of death for patients at U.S. veterans hospitals, according to an analysis that has been submitted for expert review.

Quelle surprise...

A very small study, Less than 100 elderly veterans.  Several large studies are going on now on this some with thousands. That is why almost all major news outlets ignored this story.  Before jumping to conclusions better to wait and see.

Trump should have follow your advise and not promote the drug before studies are completed. Really not late for him to correct himself but alas he just not that kind of person.

Why do you have to make this political.

Don’t see that as political but rather ethical responsibility of any leader to be disciplined and truthful.

The Trump-bashers are out as usual. TVF really know their membership and post items for ad views.

Reuters has no valid reason to put Trump's name in the Header but they do it for the same reason.

Trump had no reason to tout this medication.

368 patients, 97 of which were given hydroxychloroquine along with "standard care".  They had twice the death rate of 158 patients who received standard care and were not given the drug.  What were the number of patients that Trump based his initial plug for the drug on?

Also:

"Earlier this month, scientists in Brazil stopped part of a study testing chloroquine, an older drug similar to hydroxychloroquine, after heart rhythm problems developed in one-quarter of people given the higher of two doses being tested."  https://www.yahoo.com/news/more-deaths-no-benefit-malaria-160619592.html

That's why scientists don't rely on anecdotal evidence.

BTW:  Reuters is a major news outlet.

i doubt that.  (wasn't there an article yesterday that found his total investment in the company amounted to about $1k?)

more likely he saw some news snippet somewhere and it got stuck in his head.   so much easier to spout some nonsense he saw on a fox news ticker, or heard in a teaser soundbite.... "possible cure for corona can save your kids -- after this!"

twootering the name of some drug he heard somewhere is certainly easier than sitting down with a roomful of doctors or medical experts and........listening.

I saw news of the VA study widely reported on major media, with the caveat that it, like most of the evolving research on these topics, has yet to be peer reviewed.

However, this related news got even broader reporting:

The federal agency led by Dr. Anthony Fauci issued guidelines on Tuesday that stated there is no proven drug for treating coronavirus patients, a finding that essentially reinforces Dr. Fauci’s dissent from President Trump’s repeated promotion of certain drugs without evidence to support their use.

,,,

The expert panel did specifically advise against several treatments unless they were given in clinical trials. One was the combination of the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine plus the antibiotic azithromycin, which Mr. Trump has repeatedly promoted despite the lack of evidence that they work.

Those drugs should be used only in clinical trials “because of the potential for toxicities,” the experts said.

NIH Panel Recommends Against Drug Combination Promoted By Trump For COVID-19

A panel of experts convened by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases recommends against doctors using a combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin for the treatment of COVID-19 patients because of potential toxicities.

...

The recommendation against their combined use would seem to fly in the face of comments made by President Trump suggesting the combination might be helpful. On March 21, for example, the president described them in a tweet as having a "real chance to be one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine."
...
As for using the use of hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine alone, the panel said there was "insufficient clinical data to recommend either for or against." It reached the same conclusion about the drug remdesivir.

1. Cheap drug. Abundant supply. No big profit for Big Pharma.

2. Been used safely for many years in people with Lupus.

3. If succesful Trump would be a shoe in for 2020.

Wonder how many folk would rather it fail for political and financial reasons?

Doctors who treated with hydroxychroloquine says no deaths no ventilators. 100% recoveries. But u wont find it on CNN. As well its one of safest and essential medicines.

From the article in the link you provided:

"Conclusion: This study indicated no clinical benefits regarding HCQ for treatment of COVID-19 patients."
