rooster59
Pattaya: It's full of desperate and starving homeless people who threaten resurgence of Covid-19, says Thai media. Image: 77kaoded Thai media 77kaoded toured Pattaya last night and found many homeless people on the streets. Starving, dirty and desperate people were in business doorways, outside convenience stores and on beach road. This was a deplorable situation, they said, and threatened a rise in crime and spread of the coronavirus after the resort appeared to have things under control. They gave no evidence as to why their assertions might be thus. Popular Post graemeaylward
What are the police doing? Clearly all these people need shelter in a place of safety. As they, and the photographer may well be breaking the curfew, the Police would be within their rights and doing their duty to assist these poor people! 7
Popular Post ianezy0
I am guessing they would normally be sleeping on the beach? Of course this is not allowed but it would be more comfortable that hard concrete. Edited May 16, 2020 by ianezy0 9
Popular Post ChakaKhan
Desperate? That dude has a hand truck and a hiso mozzie tent, seems to be doing pretty well! Just reminds me of thais begging me for money to eat when there are 20 thai vendors looking at me.. As to the old adage that thais can sleep anywhere.......just an observation, tough times for all...be safe 2

Absolutely stacks of empty accommodation in the area. But that may mean that some government department would have to cough up some money. Little chance of that. ChakaKhan
Just odd, does the store front present safety for that dude? If it were me at a beach town Id be somewhere private, softer and quiet, maybe hearing the waves crashing....seems pretty open to me....just saying....but guess thais are used to sleeping on the floor on a bamboo mat anyway....nice hand truck, think somebody would swipe it in these trying times and try to sell it....or use it to loot more! Yes it is of course! but Thailand doesnt have a real one just generals and buddies lording it over the land! Money for submarines! but they let farang donations from amazing collections by farang media and bar owners do the emergency feeding of the Thais in Pattaya. Personally I would like to see the Monks nationwide doing the morning rounds but with role reversal where they take packages of food to their own people who have fed them for many years! 19

IMO, the mayor shouldn't be voicing concern, he should be making sure something is done about it. That's his job, that's what he gets paid for.

Taco
I am in Pattaya now and I don't see much if any homeless people anywhere and I have a scooter and cruise around often. I have been here for 9 days and have had one person ask me for change. If there any numbers of homeless about they are hiding out from the police that patrol after curfew but it doesn't seem to be an issue.....yet. Popular Post spidermike007
And where has the spectacularly wealthy army been during all this? Where is the assistance for the people in need? The 83% rejection rate of the paltry 5,000 baht handout said alot about where their hearts are, and the bankrupt nature of their souls. These clowns wear a mask of false national pride. Yet, when the most desperate of their countrymen are in their greatest hour of need, they are nowhere to be found.

moe666
Many of the Wats in Chiang Mai feeding the poor people more than likely in Pattaya as well. People who live there probably see it and farangs see it is well when they leave there upscale condo. Never understand why some people think it is ok to make fun and put down people who are in hard times. Edited May 16, 2020 by moe666

There is no COVID left so these people not only aren't at risk of becoming infected they certainly aren't at risk of spreading it around. When the Chinese come back more COVID will come with them, there will certainly be no herd immunity in most of China as they locked down travel inside the country. In the end there will be one country that's vulnerable to COVID and that's China.
jimmybcool
Well I didn't read the article carefully (early first cuppa and I don't really care) but as a part time resident of Pattaya off and on for 20 years I didn't see anything unusual from the pictures. There have always been people sleeping rough there. Day and night. Perhaps there are more now but difficult to judge from pictures.
