I have a car that I will not need to use for the next year but want to keep it.

 

The reason is long term sickness of my wife, we don't need 2 cars right now

so can I just leave it on my drive with no tax or insurance without having

to pay a penalty when I want to tax and insure it again?

When you want to use it again, you will have to pay the tax/compulsory insurance owed for when it was off the road anyway.

As far as I'm aware, you can't suspend use, like in U.K for example.

You can stop paying any extra insurance that you might have taken ie 1st class policy.

Yes, i agree, might be worth paying the compulsory insurance, it's only about 650 baht or thereabouts

I think you can suspend use if you hand the plates back in however if true that opens up a whole new level of pain when one wants to re-register.... far easier just to keep paying the minuscule amount to keep road tax and CTP current.

What about the compulsory insurance. Did you have to pay that as well?

Thats actually a very good question, it was about 5 years ago and I honestly cant remember.

if you miss a year you have to pay tax + small fine for that year, but no government required insurance, so on re-taxing you pay 2 x tax + small fine( missed year) + one year government required insurance

No. You only have to pay the backdated registration fees + fine, but not the past insurance

The tax for a car is not a lot and depending on the value of the car I would probably still insure it if it's an expensive car.

Not sure if you have to backpay insurance, but for sure you have to pay the tax, 

But another thing to consider is if you don't pay tax for a period of time, I think 3 years, your registration becomes void.
