It seems to me that there is a big difference between names like the Redskins and names like the Navajos. The braves may lie somewhere between them. Can't using names like the Navajos be seen as recognition to the tribes of people that are the only original Americans? I don't know that there are many native Americans represented among TVF members (used to be at least a couple who claimed partial heritage without making a big deal about it). What's more or less appropriate, offensive or respectful got to do with perceptions of minorities involved.

Once it would have been amusing. Now it pales in comparison to the mindless actions they take on a daily basis. That Trump opponents find rewriting history a la 1984 to be "awesome" it is a tiny step from where we are now to more extreme measures(yet oh so necessary in the name of PC)such as all whites being chemically castrated, and all their assets being seized and given to street gangs. A truly sad time to be alive seeing great civilizations under attack from the ignorant and jealous. You definitely have a point if that tiny step leading to the chemical castration of whites and having all their assets confiscated was a stumble that caused someone to fall down and get a concussion that resulted in a state of psychosis that featured the consequences you touted. Otherwise, not so likely.

DavisH
Rather than changing their name, why doesn't the team so something to support their local native populations - reduced price tickets to games, finding their kid's education, etc. I'm sure the team has plenty of money. Or is this not the US way?
Popular Post Thailarry
I am thrilled to know the USA does not own the franchise on racism and hate. Simple solution: Poll all the Native Americans and let them decide if it is offensive or not. When PC got big years ago the Florida State Seminoles came high on the change list. They went to the active and wealthy tribe for their opinion. FSU is a powerhouse and winner and the tribe was proud to share their name. Now how easy was that? Issue solved.

Not sure I fully understand what you are saying there but I should have probably mentioned before that I assume most native Americans don't appreciate the more neutral tribe names for teams. It's comic book level, stereotyped, and no connection really to them. But I wonder if such opinions should be all powerful. The intentions aren't bad and falsely romanticizing indigenous peoples isn't exactly a war crime. I guess what Im saying is that lines do need to be drawn on OK vs. not OK. Otherwise what's next banning the name of the city of Milwaukee? Edited July 7, 2020 by Jingthing
Popular Post johnpetersen
My advice for President Trump is to follow the advice of a certain person coincidentally also named Donald Trump: "In 2013, when President Obama said the Redskins should consider changing their name, Mr. Trump criticized him for concerning himself with such an issue. “President should not be telling the Washington Redskins to change their name-our country has far bigger problems!” Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter. “FOCUS on them, not nonsense.” https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-jumps-into-debates-over-bubba-wallace-sports-team-names-11594069995?mod=hp_lista_pos5 8
Popular Post bkk6060
I look at it as a compliment using these names for teams. And, nothing better then pounding on the drums and the crowd getting excited during the Tomahawk chop. 3
Popular Post JonnyF
How about the Washington BAMESkins? Is that Woke enough? Presumably the Chicago White Sox will have to be the Chicago Rainbow sox????? Sunderland FC should change their nickname from the Black Cats to the No White Privilege Cats. Or maybe the Cats of Color? Is that term offensive this week? ???? Man Utd's nickname the Red Devils kind of has racist overtones as well. The White devils, now that I could accept, that would be a GREAT reminder for all the horrible white people that built the club to feel guilty about things their ancestors may have done (but most likely didn't) 300 years ago. The hand wringing self loathing liberals would love that. Laughable. 3 1

Why doing so offends people who don’t support the ‘Redkins’ and likely might never have watched any of their games is a mystery. Perhaps there are too many ‘thin skins’ looking for something to be offended over. 7 1

Its a thing now with my hometown football team the Edmonton Eskimos There are no Eskimos, the northern First Nation people are Inuit or Dene Some years back they actually went to the Inuit and asked them if they found the term Eskimos hurtful or racist, the councils talked it over and the consensus came back, no, they actually liked it. Last week's uproar in Edmonton? Gotta change that racist football teams name. Edited July 7, 2020 by kwonitoy 3
