African "footballer" gets red card for 881 day overstay: Immigration reveal how they snared him

Thailand's Immigration Police in Nong Khai have revealed their tactics in arresting an African man on overstay.

A member of the public reported him and secretly took photos. Later it was revealed that the African should have been playing football for Rayong FC but was mixed up in unspecified activity.

Eric R., 32, from Ivory Coast was on 881 day overstay.

A member of the public had contacted immigration with a tip that "a black foreigner was behaving suspiciously" said INN.

The foreigner was seen at drinking establishments where there was prostitution. However, the member of the public didn't know what the foreigner got up to during the day or where he lived.

Immigration asked the informant to take a picture of the African whose image was then put into the biometrics system. But there was no record of such a person in Nong Khai.

Immigration staked out the area where he had been seen and found the foreigner at a restaurant. He was not in possession of his passport and was taken into immigration HQ where he gave a name not in the system.

But investigations revealed a person of a similar name had been residing in Rayong and had extended his visa until February 6th 2018 then stopped extending.

He had never reported that he was now living in Nong Khai.

He was originally registered as a footballer with Rayong FC but he didn't train with teammates and made frequent trips upcountry.

He fraternized with other Africans and police are investigating what he was really up to.

He is now in custody.

What’s racist about the report. What because someone identified his nationality by his obvious features? I’m covered in tattoos and I’m sure I would be identified by those first and foremost should I

  • How?   It seems nearly all the over stayers that are caught are people who have been reported by Thais and not through the immigration's super duper biometrics system.

You have not seen an African mate, because you only used 1 eye, had you used 2 maybe you would have seen 1.

Nicely racist report. Was it a local or an alien who got intimidated by a guy with a darker face then themselves?

If I am honest in all the years I have been in Thailand ( more than 10 less than twenty ) I doubt I have ever seen an African.

It turned out their suspicions were correct.

I'm guessing after Eric R., 32, from Ivory Coast  deported Rayong FC will announce the signing of a new International called Erik R., 32, from Ivory Coast

A justified report, whether you think it was racist or not (it wasn't, just some salient facts were pointed out) but, in this case, what does it matter?

Obviously that crack anti-prostitution team from Pattaya hasn't reached as far as Nong Khai yet ...

I thought that there was no prostitution in Thailand. And anyway, if there IS, how is it that the police need a n informant to catch this guy?! Don't the local bobbies spend most of their time in these 'establishments that don't exist'?

The Government Gym that I used to go to some 7 years ago, was next to the Udon Thani football field/club....There were that many Africans in it that I begun to wonder if Udon Thani FC had any Thai's in their team...

Back in the days of endless visa runs to Vientiane, Laos via Nong Khai, there was a sizeable West African (Ivory Coast, Senegal, Ghana ) gang of very nasty ex-fighters, mercenaries and militia hooligans , most wanted in their home countries for war crimes during the Senagalese-Liberian civil war.  Many were based in Laos and worked the Thai Consulate every day, grabbing all the forms and queue numbers then selling them off; a very intimidating and nasty bunch.  Laos finally cracked down on them and kicked most of them out.  Many of them settled in Nong Khai and continued their various enterprises from that side of the river.

Not only drugs.  Very much involved in the illicit gemstone trade with product from Myanmar.  They were known to have a lot of dealings with the various ethnic private armies operating in Myanmar.

Why they keep saying african instead mentioning him by his nationality , whenever someone from that continent do something everybody in the same continent is painted with the same brush. there are 50+ countries in africa , different traditions different religions different languages , but seems some people cant tell the difference.

Apart from Thaivisa posters, some of whom like to imagine "quotes" or willfully distort them, who has ever said that "there is no prostitution on Thailand"?   The RTP never have, TAT never have, no ministers ever have so what made you think that?

Same reason many people use the term European, Asian or South American without criticism, I suppose, but does it matter?   Are you saying that he isn't an African or maybe you think he will be mistaken for someone from Seychelles?

Lots of white westerners too, and I am sure they feel the same about you ????

Come on now! Tell us what is racist? Is not just that new new is telling about the man and who it is? Where does it stand that the local got intimidated?

Is it racist to report a suspicious thing? Really??? I would love to have your fantasy, but I would hate to believe it so blindly as you do.

"The foreigner was seen at drinking establishments where there was prostitution"

That description fits half of the ThaiVisa community, so you better watch out for shady locals!

Immigration reveal how they snared him

"We were sitting around, eating, chatting on FB, watching YouTube... when out of a sudden there was a phone call. First we didn't know what to do, but finally one of us picked it up and was told there was a suspicious black man around. Our boss knew right away that a photo op was possible and motivated us to do our job with a few kicks to the bottom and a lie that we get to use the BMW SmartCar. We apprehended the suspect by utilizing advanced detection techniques learned from TV, and tactical SmartMoves with strategic placement of SmartThings..., we could reveal more, but then we would have to kill you."

Did they use the "smart car"??

You don't get it, do you? He did not do a thing, he was reported by a BetterHuman because that BetterHuman did not like his face. I call this not only racist but a shame that Thailand Understanders like you try to talk it right. Which it is clearly not to <deleted> your fellow neighbors.

What was so suspicious exactly? Was the guy dealing drugs? (article didn't say he was). Was he pimping prostitutes? (again, doesn't appear so). Was he doing something else illegal? If he was, immigration police would have plastered it all over the news, that's for sure.

Or maybe what's really suspicious is that he was black and sitting in a bar? Do you think the "informer" would have contacted the police if the guy was a Caucasian footballer from Germany or England, simply out at a bar enjoying himself? It's called racial profiling.

Not saying the guy didn't deserve what he got for overstaying. But if he were a Caucasian, he would have probably gone undetected. And if he were Caucasian, (some of) you racist people and the Thai who wrote that article would not have implied he was doing other illegal stuff.
