Paintings at least 3,000 years old discovered in Phang Nga cave

A new set of ancient paintings were discovered in Phang Nga Bay Marine National Park on Friday (July 24).

 

 

 

Sarayuth Tanthien, head of the national park, said he found these ancient paintings when he led park officials to investigate the Petch Pakarang Cave at Koh Talu Island in Takua Thung district.

 

"A new set of ancient paintings were as same as other paintings found in Phang Nga Bay and nearby areas," he said. "We are waiting for related authorities to join our investigation."

 

 

He added that currently there were four places in the national park where ancient paintings were found: Khao Phra At Thao, Khao Nak, Khao Raya, and Khao Khien.

 

"We assume that these paintings were painted by ancient sailors who came to shelter from the monsoon," he added. "The Fine Arts Department said these paintings were done not less than 3,000 years ago."

Alot must have happened in those caves over the millennia. People lived, ate, crapped, had sex, murdered others and more in the caves, and they still do.

Wow, amazing, unbelievable, what an earth shattering discovery  - maybe TAT should claim a new world hub of cave paintings -- even though Australian cave-art can be dated back to about 50,000 years and maybe older.

As an art critic, I'd have say that the ones in Europe are a little better, as well as older. 

One of the most curious facts about prehistoric cave paintings is that in many cases the sizes of hand stencils suggest that many were done by young boys, and the female figurations suggest that said boys were just starting to get interested in sex. Now they would be rock stars, get it?

probably done by ancient local students taken there by their teacher, hopefully they were luckier than their descendants taken into a cave system, prone to flooding, by their teacher to do some graffiti...

When they define something as being of a certain age, this age is mostly made up, similar to the age of the pyramids and other such things. But in this case here they even say "not less than 3000 years old", so could as well be 10 or 50,000 years old.

Its interesting that all of the 1000-3000 year old Thai cave paintings are in the same colour and same pictorial style. Anyone know anything more about it or some interesting reading on this?

If they were sheltering from a monsoon they would have drawn clouds 'n rain and perhaps the odd seagull along with the internationally recognised distress signal surely ..
