(Reuters) - The global death toll from the coronavirus surpassed 700,000 on Wednesday, according to a Reuters tally, with the United States, Brazil, India and Mexico leading the rise in fatalities.

Nearly 5,900 people are dying every 24 hours from COVID-19 on average, according to Reuters calculations based on data from the past two weeks.

That equates to 247 people per hour, or one person every 15 seconds.

President Donald Trump said the coronavirus outbreak is as under control as it can get in the United States, where more than 155,000 people have died amid a patchy response to the public health crisis that has failed to stem a rise in cases.

"They are dying, that's true," Trump said in an interview with the Axios news website. "It is what it is. But that doesn’t mean we aren’t doing everything we can. It’s under control as much as you can control it. This is a horrible plague."

In Brazil, President Jair Bolsonaro has minimized the gravity of the pandemic and opposed lockdown measures, even as he and several of his cabinet tested positive for the virus.

The pandemic was initially slower to reach Latin America, which is home to about 640 million people, than much of the world. But officials have since struggled to control its spread because of the region's poverty and densely packed cities.

More than 100 million people across Latin America and the Caribbean live in slums, according to the United Nations Human Settlements Programme. Many have jobs in the informal sector with little in the way of a social safety net and have continued to work throughout the pandemic.

Even in parts of the world that had appeared to have curbed the spread of the virus, countries have recently seen single-day records in new cases, signaling the battle is far from over.

Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Bolivia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Bulgaria, Belgium, Uzbekistan and Israel all recently had record increases in cases.

Australia also reported a record number of new deaths on Wednesday, taking the country's total to 247.

According to Wikipedia the daily death rate ( from all causes ) worldwide is 150,000.

Mankind, science, the UN, and countless international agencies have spend $ trillions and decades trying to raise life expectancy just a few percent.

5900 = 4% of 150000    GONE WITH THE WIND

next.

ah but the TV barstool experts say there's no need to wear a mask and that COVID19 is a conspiracy ... lol

N95 masks are guaranteed by the manufacture under law to stop almost all SARS2 virus particles entering your airways  greatly reducing risk of infection when exposed.

No good enough? Buy an N100 mask.

I seems that a lot of Americans love their rights more than they want to live.  Covid is giving them the right to die. If they want to not wear a mask or social.  distance, well covid is right there waiting.  Wake up USA.  Being number one with this virus is not the way you want to be remembered when this is over.

Geezer

Isn't the American saying - Give us liberty or give us  death? Consistent.

1st of all... never forget who brought this misery to the world !

However, how many of these deceased who have died anyhow soon coz of excisting pre-conditions ?

700.000 of 8 billion people... how many will die of the side effects due to lockdowns and restrictions ?

How many will suffer mental problems due to poverty, broken up families, etc. due to caused economical problems due to restrictions ? All this costs billions of $ to fix, if it can be fixed.

Wake up and get your real life back.

the sensible approach is wear a mask,  distance from others and wash hands when you get home or anywhere you can.

...and to keep Thailand’s borders closed as long as possible to save us from the western idiots.

About 1.4 million people die every year on roads and highways. Maybe we should close those down to all but what those in power deem "essential".

It is very comical that everyone understands shutting down roads to save 1.4 million lives a year is stupid. Yet nobody understand that shutting down the entire earth to save about 1 million lives (in the first year) is moronic.

And never forget America brought the Spanish Flu to the world whilst you are gleefully killing people for the sake of the economy

Nice argument. I suppose people dying on roads just are not quite as important, huh? Supposedly so, according to you. That must be your stance, whether you know it or not.

The reason these "false equivalencies" need to be repeated, is you all do not seem to understand the first, or second, or third.... time you hear them. The writing is on the wall, Sweden did nothing and has pulled out and recovered from this as fast as anyone. In other words, this seems to need repeating, Sweden did nothing... they did not close their roads or their economy. And, they are recovered. You see how easy that is?

Unless you have a crystal ball then you have no way of knowing, that's the risk you face, perhaps it would be as low as Sweden with 5,760 but seeing as Thailand had been flooded with Chinese it would likely have been many more.

Sweden has a population of about 10 million. Thailand about 70 million.

If you simply extrapolated Sweden's CV death rate thus far to Thailand's population, Thailand would have about 40,000 CV deaths thus far (5744 x 7) compared to the 50-60 it's actually recorded.

The important point being  ...actually recording..   they did a similar thing with HIV/AIDS.

Whoop-de-doo !

There are 4.3 births every second, or 60 every 15 seconds, the planet is not going to die out any time soon. We've added over 40,000,000 to the planet - even allowing for covid deaths - to the planet since the virus came along.

Mask up, take care and end this daft world lockdown and get on with life, this nut case response is worse than the disease.
