HANOI (Reuters) - Vietnam has registered to buy a Russian COVID-19 vaccine, state television reported on Friday, as it fights a new outbreak after going several months with no local cases.

Russia said on Wednesday that it would roll out the world's first COVID-19 vaccine within two weeks, rejecting the concerns of experts who said it should not have been approved before completing large-scale trials.

"In the meantime, Vietnam will still continue developing the country's own COVID-19 vaccine," state broadcaster Vietnam Television (VTV) said, citing the Ministry of Health.

Vietnam has signed up for 50-150 million doses of the vaccine, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported. Some will be a "donation" from Russia, Tuoi Tre said, with Vietnam paying for the rest.

The ministry did not say when it expected to receive the vaccine, or how much it would cost. Last month, the ministry said Vietnam would have a home-grown vaccine available by the end of 2021.

Vietnam was lauded for suppressing an earlier outbreak contagion through aggressive testing, contact-tracing and quarantining, but it is now racing to control infections in multiple locations linked to the popular tourist city of Danang, where a new outbreak was detected on July 25.

Vietnam has reported a total of 911 infections, with 21 deaths. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has said the risk of wider contagion is very high, and that the next few days are critical.

The head of Vietnam's coronavirus taskforce, Vu Duc Dam, said on Friday that Vietnam now had no choice but to "live safely with the virus".

"We are implementing the anti-virus measures of a poor country, so everyone has to stay alert and know how to protect themselves from the virus," Dam said, according to state media.

All jokes aside. Russians are serious people. If they believe that they have vaccine for the virus, that must be 99% true.

Good sarcasm

But we don't know three important things yet about their vaccine:

How effective is it? If under 50 percent, not good enough.

How long does the immunity last when it works?

How safe is it?

It's an international vaccine nationalism race for sure, but odds are first is not going to be the best, or even adequate if released without enough of the usual processes.

That's why they never smile.

I doubt they would ever buy something from the US after so many of them entered the country without a visa in the 60's and early 70's.

You'd be wrong. US Vietnam relations are strong.

      Hence the term "RUSSIAN ROULLETT"

There are articles in the Vietnamese media reporting today that this Russian vaccine still needs to be tested for safety.

Many Vietnamese would prefer an American or European vaccine because they know it will have been fully tested.

However, in a poor country like Vietnam many people will not be given a choice and will follow their governments' instructions.

Do you have a link to a survey of a representative sample of Vietnamese citizens to make this statement or is this just trying to fit in with the prevailing TV hyperbole.....?

Yesterday and this morning I must have spoken with about 20 Vietnamese. Most do not trust the Russian vaccine but agree that in rural areas many people will use it as instructed by their government.

Really?

That's interesting considering that Russia was an ally of North Vietnam whose SAMs blew numerous US aircraft out of the sky in the Vietnam War.

I doubt very much whether the Vietnamese are fussed on the issue of vaccines-or their providence-unlike the lunatics in the West

Russian vaccine can't give over 60 years old or children! Hmmm... whitch age need that most, what age people it mostly kill? Was that over 60 or i just dreaming!

Clearly you do not understand today's Vietnam. The younger generations are into US/UK music and films, Kpop and Japanese food. They don't care about

Russia. They do rightly or wrongly believe that America is the land of the free and opportunity.

I truly hope this vaccine works for the many that take it. It is time we end this Chinese virus BS

and get back to a normal way of life. And yes Vietnam please send the bill to china as they surly

want to help so much.

Vietnamese have all forgotten about all that now
