TAT: Thai tourism is "seriously wounded" - 2020 needs the "5 R's"

A deputy leader of Thailand's tourism authority told a meeting that the country's tourism sector is seriously wounded from the coronavirus pandemic.

The country won't get anywhere near its target of 41.8 million tourists for this year.

In fact Thapanee Kiatphaibool said Thailand would be lucky to get 7 million visitors.

And more than 6 million of those had already come and gone in the first three months of the year before the pandemic and its economic effect took hold during the lockdown of the country.

But she expressed some optimism that June and July would see a rise in domestic tourism.

Indeed the domestic market could "be the savior for tourism operators" she told the "Restart Thailand" seminar.

There were plenty of buzzwords flying about at the seminar and Thapanee threw out her own "Five Rs".

These were the need to Rebuild, Rebalance, Refresh, Reboot and Rebound" in the tourism sector.

Under "rebound" she commented on plans for places like Phuket to introduce a new model called "Seal and Safe" in which tourists are restricted in where they can travel for their own safety.

She said that post Covid tourism was all about "trust" and assuring health and the SHA (Safety and Health Administration) certification of businesses was an important part in that.

The seminar also saw a surprise reappearance of former minister for Tourism and Sports Weerasak Kowsurat who stressed the need to spur the sector regarding domestic tourism.

He said that a group of the Thai population that had suffered greatly were young people who had left their villages to work in cities and who had lost their jobs.

Focus on this group was important in aiding Thailand's economic recovery, he said.

If tourists are restricted in where they can travel, they quite simply won't come.

No rebound, not even a "dead cat bounce"!

"These were the need to Rebuild, Rebalance, Refresh, Reboot and Rebound" in the tourism sector. "

An exercise in clutching at straws.

TAT: Thai tourism is "seriously wounded"

They should….

Rebuild - Up the quarantine period to 30 days…

Rebalance – By announcing a new TAT officially approved ‘Virtual Thailand’ package promotion….

Refresh - Transport millions of arriving tourists to their officially approved quarantine hotels….

Reboot - Give everyone 30 officially approved ‘Virtual Thailand’ DVDs to watch while in quarantine….

Rebound - After 30 days take everyone back to the airport for deportation. Count the money.

Can't miss.

I was watching Dodgeball....

I've heard the phrase 'he's the type who swallowed a dictionary', but I think the lady pictured swallowed a thesaurus. Either that or they let a management consultant loose!

The obvious flaw there is that many thais are unemployed, furlouged, flat broke and losing their homes. The idea of going on a holiday is laughable.

She may of course float the idea of an 80%-90% discount, which may tempt the people in the begging food queues

Job security? how long before "someone" realises that they are funding a defunct agency to the tune of billions of Baht a year!

Was this from last May?

Well I think she is a nice bit of stuff.

Good to hear a Thai tell the truth.

The only R‘s you need to worry about are Restriction and Rubbish.

Lift the first and stop spouting  the second and people may come back.

Anything else is just a waste of breath.

Where's gofundme link?

The article seems to be a bit out of date........."But she expressed some optimism that June and July would see a rise in domestic tourism." It would appear to be August now, or is she referring to next year???
