A fleet of deserted cruise ships docked at Chalong pier shows the devastating toll of Covid-19 on Phuket’s tourism industry.

The virus outbreak has drained the world-class destination of its economic lifeblood – foreign tourists.

Despite government stimulus measures and a mobile Cabinet meeting held In Phuket this week, local businesses have expressed fears that tourism here may never recover.

Need to show  true Cruise ships not those day tripper speed boats or ferry tourist boats.

No doubt there is a lot of hardship and collateral damage now in Phuket as result of the almost total shutdown of tourism, and that is regrettable, but there's an element of schadenfreude too, after the gross venality there in the past decade or two.

Absolutley. In the boom times, invest in the infrastructure, education and social development of the country so that when the boom times stop (and they will) you are not affected by it so much. Not a unique situation in Thailand of course.

I think it is human nature to just let the good times roll...

There are no cruise ships there, just day-trip boats.

But Phuket will soon be inundated with cruise ships waiting to drop off passengers, according to earlier reports????????

Doubt the swamp will ever be drained in any world class destination here on a more positive note ????

That's where the cruise ships are and it is not in Phuket

Is "ghost ship" the right terminology? I think ghost ships are abandoned vessels traveling with the currents through the oceans, not empty tourist ships moored and waiting for better times.

Wish they would stop describing these as stimulus measures. The scarlet pimpernel could 'stimulate' the head of the hi-so in the basket for eternity, but it would not bring the  body back to life

But wait, there is now only a 10 day quarantine to be had.  The arms have lovingly opened up to welcome those Ghost Tourists for the Ghost Cruise Ships...time to get real Thailand!

Normally this time of the year is when we start get all the boats coming back to Phuket they park up in the bay at Nai Harn beach I'll have to take a drive down there and see whats happening, I suppose they wont be allowed

This is cruise ships parked up in Manila Bay, more there now I believe invluding two of the most notorious ships, the Diamond Princess and Ruby Princess. I believe 22 cruise ships calling Manila bay home.

Cruise ships anchored at Manila Bay waiting for disembarkation clearance from the authorities for their Filipino crews. AFP

It's a cheap anchorage.
