Bangkok's governor says both Thais and foreigners approve of greater "orderliness" in the city

Bangkok's governor General Aswin Kwanmuang went on Facebook during the Loy Krathong celebration to say that both Thais and foreigners have noticed and approved of the administration's efforts to bring order to the capital.

 

In a report by Siam Rath, they said that the general had praised the efforts to clear up the Klong Ong Ang turning it from a mess into a haven of order and beauty ideal for a cultural event like Loy Krathong last weekend.

 

Not just that.

 

Efforts to ban motorcycles on sidewalks, repair the walkways and get rid of hawkers cluttering the streets has all paid dividends in making the Thai capital more orderly and livable. 

 

In places like the main avenue of Sukhumvit Road where there has been a lot of wire and cable burying underground, both Thais and foreign residents have said it is now much better, claimed the governor. 

 

The general promised even more orderliness to come. It will take time but Bangkok will continue to just get better and better.

 

Thaivisa notes that while many agree with the greater order in Bangkok, there is still a vocal opposition who miss what they see as the character filled clutter of days gone by. 

 

Some have complained that the beautifying of Bangkok is making it more sterile like Singapore.

It really is not that difficult to make an empty 'box' look orderly.

Of course it will look nicer ! He has got rid of all the nice food carts and vendors, they have nobody to sell to,  and there are no tourists to block the footpaths !

Getting rid of the food carts and street vendors is ripping the heart out of the city.

 

I can only assume the big shops and restaurants demanded this happen (demand=brown envelopes)

"Efforts" aren't worth much unless they're serious. I have seen exactly zero reduction in motorcycles on sidewalks since they began their supposed campaign - the police put up some signs promising dire consequences for violators, and then left and never returned. Now the signs have fallen down.

 

Yes, there are some walkways being repaired, which is fine, but the locations chosen for repair don't seem to correspond with the places that are in the worst condition - and many of the projects are poorly executed, with the result that the new sidewalks start coming apart within weeks or months.

 

There are places (like the north side of lower Sukhumvit) where getting rid of vendors was definitely a good thing - stalls selling knock-off garbage used to totally block the sidewalk. In most areas, though, all that the removal accomplished was to put a lot of poor people out of business and leave local workers and residents without cheap places to eat, while adding little or no improvement to the neighborhood.

 

Burying the overhead wires, however, was unquestionably a good thing, and should be done everywhere.

Many tourists used to get in the way of motorcycle taxis.
