Thai media Daily News reported that a couple with a young son were arrested with 59 kilos of methamphetamine or ice hidden in an icebox and a secret compartment of a Mitsubishi Triton pick-up at the Mae Jan checkpoint in Chiang Rai in the north of Thailand.

Piyapong, 36,  and Napaporn, 20, were stopped on Saturday by rangers and local police.

Piyapong, from Bangkok, said it was the first time he had done a drugs' trip from the north and he was heading back to Bangkok with this consignment that was worth 88.5 million baht.

He was to be paid 350,000 baht for the job - he got 50,000 baht up front.

He had taken many other consignments south from Bangkok before without problems.

Daily News posed a pertinent question on behalf of their child: Who is going to look after me?

The pair will face a very long prison sentence if convicted.

Prolly should have considered the dilemma before running drugs.

Family will take care of the kid whilst mum and dad die in jail.

Certainly not fit to bring up a kid

Always wondered why the police don't go with the drugs to catch the one or ones in Bangkok as if nothing has happened ! possibly a tip off while another better load goes thru undetected !

And let the cops down in Bangkok keep the 88 million baht of produce?

It's quite deliberate, I'm working on the assumption that a sacrificial lamb is offered up for face saving every now and again.

For all we know most of these drugs could be as fake as the chance this guy made it to his destination - he was obviously completely and utterly setup from the beginning. Pure entrapment.

Why would you doubt that? Even if 10 tonnes get napped and only 1 ton gets through, they (the people behind this) still make huge profits. It's that cheap to produce..

https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/meth-syndicate/

"The money the syndicate is making “means that if they lose ten tonnes and one goes through, they still make a big profit,” said the Chinese counter-narcotics official. “They can afford failure. It doesn’t matter.”"

Choosing drugs is always the wrong option.

So only the first trip north?

They deserve to go to prison.

They said they had done many trips south before, this was the first drug run from the north.... hardly starving !

I can assure you the drugs are not fake they are tested chemically  in a GC machine that prints out its chemical composition

Yip, there's always someone to take the kids, they generally get passed about like hot potatoes.

Auntie gets kid, she gets bored and fobs off to Granny, who gets bored and fobs off to aunty #2 and so on......

Normal.

Yes, of course, no doubt you are both right.

But just look at that saddest of pictures. A mother holding her child, probably for the last time ever...
