I am considering the possibility to buy an electric scooter, sufficiently powerful to carry two people.
I would use it only for short trips.

Does anyone have some experience with an electric scooter up and down on the Phuket hills ?

Any brand, model or dealer to suggest ?

Thanks

I had a 500w electric bike/scooter with pedals. It did not like to carry 2 people, and it did not like hills. If you use them in this way, it will destroy your battery pack and possibly burn out the motor.

Many thanks, Stubuzz, actually I was looking for something more powerful, similar to this :

same same but different... all have same problem on hilly areas, battery die fast, they are good only on flat roads and even then using them on a regular basis the battery loses power and has to be changed every 2-3 years, had/used them in China and had to change every 2-3 years, not worth the trouble

Electric scooters are allright for pattaya or bangkok. Phuket, I would say NO. They don't have much power. Expect running costs to be on a higher end.

Also check if you need a license. I have seen Traffic cops stopping foreigners in Pattaya many times.

Lithium batteries can usually be charged about 1000 times, electric bikes do struggle up hills especially if carrying a lot of weight, as a guide, whatever range is claimed, half it, and whatever top spe3, knock 25% off!!

I have an electric unicycle which has been going strong for 4 years now. However, this is with a (then) top quality lithium ion battery that I have carefully maintained. The number 1 rule is to always keep it at 100% charge (e.g. do not let it sit around for a few days at half charge).

I imagine a powerful enough e-bike would be at least 10 KW, would only be good for about 25 km loaded down with 2 people and in a hilly environment, and would cost over 50,000 Baht (maybe closer to 75,000 Baht) for one with a quality battery.

Anything under 30,000 Baht on today's market will not last more than a year for the use you describe (high weight and hills).

I don't think that the technology is quite affordable yet (compared to an IC scooter) for what you need.

If you do get one, be ruthless at keeping the battery topped up, when not in use, for maximum battery life.

I am looking at that same scooter myself, upgrading from a 4-year-old Thai electric scooter.  It has very high quality components and a powerful motor.  I am sure it could handle one person on the hills, but I'm not sure about two.  Is there a dealer in Phuket where you could ask for a test drive?  I've only seen them in the .Life shops in Bangkok.

I can never tell if people are talking about kiddie toy (like the one on the picture above ^^^) or a proper e-motorbike (also called e-scooter).

Modern e-motorbikes are quite powerful, though not very popular in Thailand yet.

That is exactly the scooter I have now.  It is *not* powerful enough for two people on the hills in Phuket.  I suspect that the Niu could be.

Somehow I missed the link, Niu looks way more interesting! Though I doubt regarding two people going uphill (20-30 degrees incline). 125cc Click is just enough for me alone to climb hills on Samui.

Just noticed that Star 8 Thailand has just released a new e-motorcycle, Minerva (more contemporary styling; similar specs to the Horus model, I think) on their Facebook page (but not on their website yet), but I'm not able to paste the link here.    facebook dot com / Star8Thailand /
