Bedroom fan has developed a big end knock.

I need to replace it.

Any brand recommendations?

Just need a fan with the old rheostat control I think.

56" with 4 blades preferred.

I've been happy with these, aim for the top end

Replacing the bearings may be a cheap fix ????

Actual "rheostat" controls went out with the ark, switched speed controllers use capacitors, continuously variable ones a triac (these can cause some units not designed for them to buzz annoyingly).

Yes thanks. I re-remember now the controllers are capacitors. Just looking at the big box on the wall and my mind went back to them olden days.

Bearings could be a project for the future, but think the fan was only about B600 6 years ago.

My preference are Mr Ken fans on slow speed they are absolutely silent The warranty period is 10 years for motors and 2 years for remote or wall controllers

this is our bedroom one, many other  colours are available as well a blade materials

Yes Thanks, like Mr Ken and bought one to replace a kitchen fan, but not sure how to hide the electronics above the fan.

I borrowed an 'electrician' who was doing a job for the 'cheese and kisses' and that installation is the best he could come up with. The top maybe should have gone on the wall, not sure, but the sparky was grumpy and that's it. Don't want another one like that.

We bought a bunch from Mr. Ken.  About 11 years ago.  Had nothing but problems with them.  But I think the reason was they had just changed suppliers for the motors.  They replaced every motor for free.  A few of the fans, several times!  They are working OK now, but not fantastic.

If you want a quiet fan, get the best you can buy.

Most/almost all Mr Ken fans are able to be mounted either directly to a ceiling, as my bedroom one above, or on a pole as the following are, there are a variety of lengths of mounting pole available. My living room fans are 3 metres up so they aren’t obvious when off, they are available with or without an LED light. The electronics are directly above the fan, the ceiling only needs the power (line neutral and earth) then if you want a wall control you will need to route the wires for that, mine are all on wireless remotes so I don’t remember if anything extra is needed for that.

I fitted all of them myself and have 1 more that is not fitted yet so can take pictures of it if you like. They also have a balance kit with them in case they need it, so far only 2 of the 9 have had to be balanced.

We used to have ceiling fans. IMO they are useless, they just push the hot air down. Also a <deleted> to clean. I have now fitted remote wall fans. By Hatari 1.600bht? (Their are other makes) Easy to fit and can be controlled whilst in bed, or any other place. You will find that setting on the first setting is normally good enough. Have a think about it before you go to the bother of Ceiling fans.

in our old place we had both wall (because the ceiling was too low) and AC ceiling fans, now we only have ceiling fans and floor fans, IMNSHO wall fans are too limited as they either point in one direction or swing past you so the benefit is limited to about ¼ of the time.

as to pushing hot air down that is a fabled difference as few rooms have any significant temperature differential and any fan will almost always disturb the air enough so there’s no stratification anymore.

Having said that we do have one room with a 6 metre section in it but the room design and fan positioning doesn’t effect that space DAMHIKT. 67C16811-E312-49AB-86C4-9102ABFC597C.thumb.jpeg.a298c1d09ad1977c485ef4a748f135c6.jpeg

All fans only point in one direction. Why I don't like ceiling fans is because they push all the hot air down and they tend to be noisy. We had ceiling fans in one of our bedrooms. Was as next to useless. Tried a remote wall fan and the difference was remarkable. Have now change to wall and Large/Small freestanding ones + of cause Aircons: and things are as good as they can be. Well for me anyway. F/Standing ones during the day and wall fans in the bedroom at night. I find that I don't even need the A/C at night even during the hottest ones. I do have though insolated ceilings they make a vast difference.

Your fans looking great. Yours all have a big cover above them, my Mr Ken fan didn't come with a big cover above, hence the bad looking installation.

Your fan may just need blades balanced.

I had a fear the our fan might drop on the bed, so had wall fan fitted, much better.

But the best of all was having a small aircon unit aimed at the bed, running on slow speed

at 21 degrees, cool kip guaranteed..

Naturally they point in one direction however almost all are either big enough (all except one of my ceiling fans are, but then that has 3 motors and 3 small fans) or they have an oscillating action so only get to you ¼ of the time or only effect a very limited area.

As to pushing hot air down, as I mentioned that is untrue as a benefit in most rooms, as the air will/can not stay stratified unless you have no air movement which any fan will not allow. The exception to this, though even then not really an exception is in my photo above where the area does allow for still air.

The noise on low speed is poor blade design and or motor design, not usual on cheap units, our house has excellent sound insulation and the fans are absolutely silent on speed 1 & 2, the base line is 48db, almost inaudible on 3 (+0.5db) quiet on 4 (+1db)  and only become something you can hear on gale force 5 (+1.5~2db) and 6(+2~3db to 51db)

Your setup works for you, I wasn’t prepared to economise in the short term and with the DC motors the fans use substantially less power so will have paid for them selves soon, if they haven’t already

yours almost certainly wasn’t complete, or very much older than mine. This the installation page for the downrod mountings

the small cone fits on the motor, the larger on the ceiling.

it is certainly possible that an AC motor version could be different but I don’t think so.

all the parts are available separately if you want to add a cowling.

FWIW the CDC has an English speaking person who is helpful, we’ve got a discount twice there, I’ve also picked up from the distribution warehouse and noticed that all orders were being checked to be sure that all the parts were in all the boxes, very good practice.

9Impulse buying at our new Global House, just opened. Cuts 200km of the previous Global House visits.

Not too sure how the new fan will go on the long shaft, and the beauty about Global is you can take the product back.

As my wife keeps reminding me when she has to get the cobwebs down from the ceiling. 'Why did you make the ceiling 8 m high?' Times like this I wonder.

I bought an Eilon ZW-010/4P.

It should be easy to get a threaded shaft, then cut, drill holes to your requirement.

.Well had to take that back as the shaft was the wrong size.

Ended up with a plain Mitsubishi fan. Nice and quiet as well. Does the job, but a pain to install for an old fella on a 3 m ladder. Had to change the new controller over to the old controller box as not the same size and would have required wall painting. All done.
