Asked whether each ministry would now be inspected for corruption, he said monitoring for government graft was the media’s job.

Just don't name names or be sued for defamation in a corrupt court.

No it isn't.

He added that government officials preferred working behind closed doors because they were afraid of being attacked by the media if they were too transparent.

They are attacked by the media (politely, because this is Thailand and reporters have to know their place and respect their 'betters') precisely because they are not transparent.

Living in Thailand is like living through Alice's looking glass.

Now the NACC will be shot or imprisoned for defaming the country.

Case in point he is now worth a cool 2 billion baht when he was only worth just millions when he swept himself into power.  To bad this country can not do like Malaysia and the corrupt bribe taking brown envelope takers rounded up and arrested.  Or maybe like Saudi Arabia did a few years ago just imprison the lot in a hi-so hotel for well, life. Something needs to change, all these scheming tards need to be tossed out.

I read a couple of weeks back from another poster, when he came to power he was worth 2 billion and today he's worth 5 billion this from a Wiki source, i can't vouch for it but can easily believe it!

It would be laughable were the problem not so serious; over a period of thirty-five years I have seen variations on this theme regularly aired in the media, by government spokespeople and by ordinary Thais. Nothing changes. And nothing will without a root-and-branch destruction of patrimony, nepotism and indeed of Thai society, which has long since adapted to, and learned to function within, the status quo. Existing power structures are self-serving, and that being the case, there is little to no hope of cleaning up corruption. It is endemic in the body of the state.

If they outdid the Yingluck administration they deserve some kind of prize, but since I'll never have enough information to judge one way or another, I'll just accept the obvious--that non-corruption is the exception.

In his mandatory 4 September 2014 asset disclosure to the National Anti-Corruption Commission, the prime minister listed 128.6 million baht (US$3.9 million) in assets and 654,745 baht (US$20,000) in liabilities.[His assets included a Mercedes Benz S600L, a BMW 740Li series sedan, three additional vehicles, nine luxury watches valued at three million baht,[US$200,000 in jewelry, and several pistols. He also reported the transfer of 466.5 million baht (US$14.3 million) to other family members. As army chief, prior to his retirement at the end of September, the general received a 1.4 million baht (US$43,000) annual salary.

Since the last time I looked the links showing his wealth at 2 billion baht have disappeared, but then maybe he is so very wealth because Prayut is a published songwriter. In the aftermath of the 2014 coup, Prayut wrote a song called "Return Happiness to Thailand", which is widely played on state radio and television stations.  The song communicates that the Thai people had not been happy as a result of the political crisis, and that the junta has come to return happiness to the people.

So his wealth must be from all of the royalties he has received every time it is played.....lol

Just what is the governments job then?

Surpass the previous corruption figures.

... and the reason for the 2014 coup was the end corruption. Another first-class job.

How dare these foreign peasants make scurrilous accusations against our Great Leader who has led Thailand almost single-handedly from a period of darkness into new dawn of enlightened philosophy, prosperity and almost universal happiness?

Then what is the job of the anti-corruption office exactly?

If this is the media's job, will they also get impunity from getting banana peels thrown at them by the PM when they start asking questions about inexplainable wealth?

This is weird, an organisation with a politically appointed guy at its head, and noted for its, allegedly, bipartisan approach, calls out the "NCPO Junta". Some power plays going on here, methinks. I'm speaking as a layman, I wouldn't pretend to understand the layers of the onion that make up the power structure in Thailand. I must say the response, as reported, has been rather lame.

Is anybody here really surprised by these findings?

"Asked whether each ministry would now be inspected for corruption, he said monitoring for government graft was the media’s job."

.... who'll then get slapped with a defamation suit.

I think this should come as a surprise to only the most naive amongst us. When was the last time a high ranking policeman, army officer, administration member, parliamentarian (within the ruling party), immigration or customs officer was arrested, tried and convicted, and sentenced to actual prison time? How about the same for the super wealthy? Red Bull case ring a bell? The Dark Tao killings? The list goes on and on and on. And if you even begin to examine human trafficking, illegal fishing, drugs trafficking, one can only imagine where the trail would lead.

Prayuth is not only NOT making any attempt to tackle corruption, he and his band of cronies are doing everything in their power to protect the above. The nation is not in good hands. The students are correct. Oh, will I be arrested for saying that?

He said that people would always try to cheat the system

Seems he's accepted that Thai society is corrupt and he's OK with that.

He's gone from 2014's promise to stamp out corruption "once and for all" to this.

Was that stamp out the corruption (competition) that threatened the corruption which is /has  been approved and tolerated by napolean and cohorts?

Right at the start some people on here were stating that brown envelopes had increased from 30% of a contract to 40% of the contract and some on here ridiculed those comments.  When you have a system where promotions and positions are paid for meaning that the most corrupt rise through the ranks so you end up with a system so devolved of honour and talent. Not an eyelid is raised how these things become millionaire and even billionaires on very modest salaries.  And then you have a self confessed Mafia man who is a drug smuggler who spent hard time in an Australian prison now in a senior possition. It all is quite disgusting.

Cockroach infestation...... !     Tea money has been around 45 %  for a few years now......  You couldn't even get a cure for cancer into Thailand without paying all the little greedy hands off first..... It's in the DNA, it's called greedy little #$%@ syndrome.......  Disgusting indeed.......

I can see the arrests coming, especially some of us on here who are only spouting the obvious truth, i'm just glad i'm NOT in the country and i'm hoping that while i'm away common sense prevails and the students and others with a more forward thinking attitude get into a position where they can assist Thailand in maturing from a fiefdom into a country for its people.....  But then again it would have to have politicians elected by the people, for the people......    Something certain individuals will not allow to happen at all cost.........  too many brown envelopes still on the table..........and too many snouts in the trough......
