US Capitol on lockdown after escalating situation among demonstrators

From Ted Barrett and Manu Raju

John Minchillo/AP

The US Capitol is on lockdown during a tense situation with demonstrators outside the building, according to Capitol police officers.

A CNN employee tried to leave the building and couldn’t because police said the building is on lockdown.

Congress is currently in session to count and certify the Electoral College votes for president and vice president.

Lockdown didn't keep the demonstrators out. This is on Trump.

From CNN’s Evan Perez

Federal and local law enforcement are responding to reports of possible pipe bombs in multiple locations in Washington, DC.

It’s unclear if the devices are real or a hoax, but they’re being treated as real.

Pro-Trump protesters have stormed the Capitol. Here's what we know now.

Pro-Trump protesters have stormed the US Capitol, as members of Congress were meeting to certify the Electoral College results of the 2020 presidential election.

Video from inside the Capitol showed Trump supporters marching through Statuary Hall. The US Capitol Police is asking for additional law enforcement for assistance in containing the protests, including federal authorities, per a source familiar.

The lunatics have taken over the asylum; unbelievable images circulating. Never thought they'd be allowed to go this far.

Live streams just reported a lady was shot in the neck inside the capitol building.

That's not good if the report is accurate, but what are people expecting when they enter a federal building like that?

Why is there no police to arrest or shoot the illegal intruder in the Senate chamber?

They're where some inside from pics (gun drawn trying to barricade a door):

Others busy escorting people through the escape tunnels/corridors:

And footage of a fairly large convoy of cops and SWAT teams on the way from an ABC (Australian) correspondent. Things could get ugly (ier).

This is cult behavior.

They are terrorists.

Osama bin Laden led al Qaeda terrorists; 45 leads these terrorists.

They should he handled the same way we handled al Qaeda. No mercy.

They need to be prosecuted under the law.

If the police are smart they just let the protesters burn themselves out until they go home.

Seems like they got control over most of the exits once again, so if they can keep the protesters outside, they will eventually just go home.

If the police and so on roll out all the hardware it's only going to cause more trouble.

When terrorists are in the act of committing terror, we do not prosecute, we execute.

Breaching the corridors of power deserves no quarter, no patience, no mercy.

Then arrest their leader. He's across town at 1600 PA Ave.

Could it be that Washington DC police had also stooped to Trump order to "stand back"?

Outnumbered? That could be said for Ukraine for example, but not for the USA. Keep in mind that Trump was inciting people a few blocks up the street prior to Congress beginning the session. The sight of protesters rummaging through both chambers made me avert my eyes.

The law enforcement forces just weren't ready. That needs to be investigated but they aren’t the criminals here.
