The presence of extreme rightwingers and supporters of the extreme rightwing within the police is no big secret.

 

The observation you make has been made by others, some of whom are now in position to investigate the role of officers in this failed coup.

Breaking news.  Pence has told some he's not ruling out the 25th amendment in case Trump's mental state gets worse.  Apparently, he's going downhill fast.  Just watching TV.

If you stop the lies from the POTUS, a lot of this BS will go away.  Trump fanned the flames.  And the not so bright fell for it.

 

You are right, most follow the rules.   But as we saw, many don't, and many fall for the lies by politicians and right wing media outlets.

This was not a protest, it was sedition, an attempted coup.

 

 

What sickens me is the fact Trump’s attacks on democracy, the Constitution, the separation of powers, the judiciary, the media, his hate baiting, stochastic terrorism and tyranny were on full display and discussed from day one of his presidency.

 

This sedition and failed coup didn’t simply happen overnight, it’s been fermented throughout Trump’s Presidency by Trump himself and amplified by those repeating his lies and defending the clearly dangerous path he was following.

Part of the problem with the radicalization of the right wing in US politics is blowback from the military aggression exercised by America, especially since 9/11 when the US became the only nation in history, as far as I know, to announce a state of permanent war.  The result was a militarization of the society and the creation of a large number of ex-military trained in violence and available to become a supply of domestic terrorists from Timothy McVeigh, DC sniper John Allen Muhammed, and others including 34 of 97 mass shooters listed in the database of "Mother Jones" magazine.

Last coup I witnessed in Thailand involved a lot of military. 

When I look back at other coups worldwide they usually involve large parts of the armed forces taking side. 

 

I didn't see that the other day. 

So it might have been at attempt, but a really bad one.

He’s never in his coddled life faced being held to account.

 

His malignant narcissism.

 

The criminal prosecutions that await him when he leaves office.

The US Dept. of Defense has already been implicated in Wed. coup attempt since Governor Hogan of Maryland called for permission from the Secretary of Defense to send the Maryland National Guard into Washington D.C. to defend the Congress during the attack.  The Secretary of Defense refused to take the Governor's call.  An hour and a half later the Governor did send in his National Guard on the permission from the Secretary of the Army, who, however, lacks authority to grant such permission as both the Governor and the General undoubtedly knew.

 

Military involvement can therefore be active participation or passively standing down while others do the dirty work.  Certainly, this coup was poorly planned just like every other endeavor in Trump's life, but the likely scenario was: incite the attack on the Congress which results in a massacre of members of Congress and/or setting fire to the Capitol itself, followed by Trump's declaring martial law and announcing the "delay" of Biden's inauguration.  

 

It's worth remembering that the governor's mansion of the state of Washington was also attacked by a mob the same day, who, however, failed to gain entry.  It's possible that other attacks on state governors were planned, all of which would give credence to a national emergency requiring the imposition of martial law.
