Capitol Police were woefully unprepared; perhaps even complicit.

They answer to congress, NOT Trump.

Make you think, doesn't it?

Just like the National Guard who answer to Trump, but whom he refused to call.   Makes you think, doesn't it?

  • They caused a lot of damage inside the building.  Trump should pay for it.  His campaign paid for all the infrastructure outside.  They should pay for the damage outside also.

The presence of extreme rightwingers and supporters of the extreme rightwing within the police is no big secret.

The observation you make has been made by others, some of whom are now in position to investigate the role of officers in this failed coup.

Extremist within the police force are about to get the attention they deserve.

What a difference an election makes.

If you look at how divided America is there is no doubt the future will bring more problems.

Was it 75 millions that voted for Trump?

It's not like they magically will turn into Biden fans.

Most of those people are ordinary people that follow the rules, but a part of them are willing to go to extremes.

Just like there are extremists on the other side voting for Biden.

Let's hope the authorities are better prepared this time.

I'm sure there will be some trying to cause havoc, but they will be on a short leash this time.

Everyone have the right to protest but they also have to do the time if they break the law.

Breaking news.  Pence has told some he's not ruling out the 25th amendment in case Trump's mental state gets worse.  Apparently, he's going downhill fast.  Just watching TV.

If you stop the lies from the POTUS, a lot of this BS will go away.  Trump fanned the flames.  And the not so bright fell for it.

You are right, most follow the rules.   But as we saw, many don't, and many fall for the lies by politicians and right wing media outlets.

Fingers crossed, things clam down now that Trump lost his Twitter megaphone.

This was not a protest, it was sedition, an attempted coup.

What sickens me is the fact Trump’s attacks on democracy, the Constitution, the separation of powers, the judiciary, the media, his hate baiting, stochastic terrorism and tyranny were on full display and discussed from day one of his presidency.

This sedition and failed coup didn’t simply happen overnight, it’s been fermented throughout Trump’s Presidency by Trump himself and amplified by those repeating his lies and defending the clearly dangerous path he was following.

Utterly sickening.

Part of the problem with the radicalization of the right wing in US politics is blowback from the military aggression exercised by America, especially since 9/11 when the US became the only nation in history, as far as I know, to announce a state of permanent war.  The result was a militarization of the society and the creation of a large number of ex-military trained in violence and available to become a supply of domestic terrorists from Timothy McVeigh, DC sniper John Allen Muhammed, and others including 34 of 97 mass shooters listed in the database of "Mother Jones" magazine.

An as-yet unknown number of the putschists from Wed. were former military.

 I think that's 2 different persons.

Both are under arrest though.

Good luck with that. Chao and Devos have bailed in order to avoid dealing with that possible but highly unlikely scenario.

It's impossible to have intelligent conversations with Trump fans.  The minute you show them The NY Times, WaPo, CNN, they just yell "FAKE NEWS"....or something worse than that.  Impossible to talk with them when they think like this.

Yes, the violent attack on the Capitol in an attempt to prevent Biden’s confirmation meets the definition of a coup.

"To save the country, in their eyes, the pro-Trump rioters assaulted the same building the actual Flight 93 passengers died to protect. The riot showed how the tenor of contemporary Republican messaging could be fueling white conservatives’ extremism."

In response to people toppling confederate statues, Trump signed an executive order mandating longer prison sentences for people damaging Federal property.

Enjoy.

I hear what you are saying, but if they seriously thought a coup could be done like that, they should have spent some more time studying how coups are done.

Last coup I witnessed in Thailand involved a lot of military.

When I look back at other coups worldwide they usually involve large parts of the armed forces taking side.

I didn't see that the other day.

So it might have been at attempt, but a really bad one.

They tried and now they have to pay the price.

The whole thing after the election has been a cluster<deleted>. I seriously never understood why Trump just didn't realize he lost and moved on.

If he had done what any normal politician would do, he would leave and let the American people experience how Biden/Harris rules the next 4 years and then he could have a go for the post again.

Now he can forget about that.

Maybe I'm just naive because we're so used to see a shift in powers here in Denmark, so it's no big deal if the left or right side wins. It still sucks when your favorites lose, but we just move on and hope for the best next time.

The USA is at permanent war for over 200 years.

Even it that is true it is nevertheless a huge step to announce that permanent war is now the policy of the US govt.

Trump would still be president if had shut up and worn a mask.  He's his own worst enemy.  Something many of us have known for a very long time.

Trump did not accept defeat for three reasons.

He’s never in his coddled life faced being held to account.

His malignant narcissism.

The criminal prosecutions that await him when he leaves office.

.....

As for this being a ‘stupid, coup, we’ll stupid people do stupid thins.

Pretty much in line with his other accomplishments, from real estate to pandemic management.

On sites such as TheDonald.Win and Parler, Trump supporters had been plotting the attack for weeks, promising violence if Congress didn’t overturn the results of the presidential election. They discussed the weapons they would bring and brainstormed which lawmakers they would hang first. “I’m thinking it will be literal war on that day,” one commenter posted on TheDonald’s forum last month, according to the Daily Beast. “Where we’ll storm offices and physically remove and even kill all the D.C. traitors and reclaim the country.”

The US Dept. of Defense has already been implicated in Wed. coup attempt since Governor Hogan of Maryland called for permission from the Secretary of Defense to send the Maryland National Guard into Washington D.C. to defend the Congress during the attack.  The Secretary of Defense refused to take the Governor's call.  An hour and a half later the Governor did send in his National Guard on the permission from the Secretary of the Army, who, however, lacks authority to grant such permission as both the Governor and the General undoubtedly knew.

Military involvement can therefore be active participation or passively standing down while others do the dirty work.  Certainly, this coup was poorly planned just like every other endeavor in Trump's life, but the likely scenario was: incite the attack on the Congress which results in a massacre of members of Congress and/or setting fire to the Capitol itself, followed by Trump's declaring martial law and announcing the "delay" of Biden's inauguration.

It's worth remembering that the governor's mansion of the state of Washington was also attacked by a mob the same day, who, however, failed to gain entry.  It's possible that other attacks on state governors were planned, all of which would give credence to a national emergency requiring the imposition of martial law.
