Capitol Police were woefully unprepared; perhaps even complicit.

They answer to congress, NOT Trump.

Make you think, doesn't it?

The presence of extreme rightwingers and supporters of the extreme rightwing within the police is no big secret.

The observation you make has been made by others, some of whom are now in position to investigate the role of officers in this failed coup.

Extremist within the police force are about to get the attention they deserve.

What a difference an election makes.

the congressman resigned, Q Shaman and many other rioters in jail, GOP members running for cover.  Maybe, in the end, this was a good thing?  Sadly, 5 are now dead because of their actions.

And they say they aren't done:

If you look at how divided America is there is no doubt the future will bring more problems.

Was it 75 millions that voted for Trump?

It's not like they magically will turn into Biden fans.

Most of those people are ordinary people that follow the rules, but a part of them are willing to go to extremes.

Just like there are extremists on the other side voting for Biden.

Let's hope the authorities are better prepared this time.

I'm sure there will be some trying to cause havoc, but they will be on a short leash this time.

Everyone have the right to protest but they also have to do the time if they break the law.

Breaking news.  Pence has told some he's not ruling out the 25th amendment in case Trump's mental state gets worse.  Apparently, he's going downhill fast.  Just watching TV.

This was not a protest, it was sedition, an attempted coup.

Lemme guess. The guy with the horns who took over Pelosi's desk?

 I think that's 2 different persons.

Both are under arrest though.

Good luck with that. Chao and Devos have bailed in order to avoid dealing with that possible but highly unlikely scenario.

Thanks, good article and IMO accurate. trump fans and others should read if they still do not comprehend the 'big lie' tactics and strategy deployed by trump; highly likely organised with massaged messaging for trump by Stephen Miller and other traitors trying to undermine US democracy.

"To save the country, in their eyes, the pro-Trump rioters assaulted the same building the actual Flight 93 passengers died to protect. The riot showed how the tenor of contemporary Republican messaging could be fueling white conservatives’ extremism."

Part of the problem with the radicalization of the right wing in US politics is blowback from the military aggression exercised by America, especially since 9/11 when the US became the only nation in history, as far as I know, to announce a state of permanent war.  The result was a militarization of the society and the creation of a large number of ex-military trained in violence and available to become a supply of domestic terrorists from Timothy McVeigh, DC sniper John Allen Muhammed, and others including 34 of 97 mass shooters listed in the database of "Mother Jones" magazine.

An as-yet unknown number of the putschists from Wed. were former military.

The USA is at permanent war for over 200 years.

Even it that is true it is nevertheless a huge step to announce that permanent war is now the policy of the US govt.

On sites such as TheDonald.Win and Parler, Trump supporters had been plotting the attack for weeks, promising violence if Congress didn’t overturn the results of the presidential election. They discussed the weapons they would bring and brainstormed which lawmakers they would hang first. “I’m thinking it will be literal war on that day,” one commenter posted on TheDonald’s forum last month, according to the Daily Beast. “Where we’ll storm offices and physically remove and even kill all the D.C. traitors and reclaim the country.”
