Blood Pressure has gone through the roof!

The last couple of days my blood pressure has shot up to dangerous levels, just checked this morning and it was 200/98. It's never ever been as high as that, normally it's around 140/80. I do take medication, Losartan and Metoprolol which normally keeps it under control, so not sure why it's so elevated at the moment. Problem is I'm worried about going to hospital because of Covid 19, but at the same time I can't risk leaving my BP at such a dangerous level. What can I do to try and bring it down? I guess my other question is what can the hospital do to bring it down immediately.

Im sure worrying is not going to do it better! 
 

Go to hospital!

 

Then make a long term plan to make your blood pressure go down for future and not only short term treatment.

My worry is getting a Covid infection at the hospital, and what can they do to get my BP down quickly?

Check the battery in your BP machine. Sometimes a low battery will give an inaccurate reading.

Go to a Hospital straight away

They will probably give you some IV Drugs to bring down the pressure as well as some tests for things such as Stroke or Heart Attack Etc.

Dont worry ! Just do this, or you  could possibly be putting yourself at risk.

Go to the hospital, your immediate concern is high BP, not Covid.

 

As another guy said, worrying about it will just make it worse. Hospitals have protocols and procedures to screen potential Covid patients and keep them separate.

The most practical and obvious decision would be to visit a hospital and have a trained medical doctor diagnose and treat you?

You really need to see a doctor. I go to the government hospital at Bang Saen and your BP is always checked on arrival, if it is over 150 they make you sit and do it again to make sure it comes down.

I have been on hypertension medication for about 40 years and now get my prescriptions every 3 months from the hospital, all through the crisis I have never felt any problem in attending the hospital. Been several times in the last couple of weeks for something else and the place was virtually deserted.

 

Metoprolol is a beta blocker. Some years ago my doctor in the UK took me off beta blockers and put me on Ace inhibitor, maybe something you should look into, could be more effective.

Giddyup lie down quietly for 20/30 minutes, stay off here, as that is a sure way of raising your BP.

Take your BP again, if possible with another BP machine.

If after that your BP is still near 200 get yourself off to hospital, and yes they can give you something to bring it down, done it for me before.

Most importantly... Keep calm, worrying about covid will only make it worse.

Same posting all over again. You will not have a higher risk getting infected of covid by visiting the hospital, than the risk you are taking by staying home without a clue and might die.

Just go to the hospital. That´s the only thing you can do right now. After you have to learn to control your blood pressure on long term basis.

But sometimes I find it surprising when nurses measure my blood pressure in the hospital and sometimes it's high. And then 10 minutes later the doctor measures it manually and it is perfectly ok.

So maybe the problem is just your equipment.

 

Any doctor anywhere should be able to accurately measure your blood pressure. You don't have to visit a hospital for that.

Worrying can be a killer.

Before I take a BP reading either at home or at a hospital, I sit for a couple of minutes and slow down my breathing.

It stops white coat syndrome.

Clearly with those numbers you have a restriction to flow, whatever is causing it. Go for a gentle, relaxing 15 minute walk ,then sit down for 10 minutes and check your BP again. If it is still so high then you have no option other than to go to a doctor who understands such issue or hospital. Ignoring it will not cure it and even 140 / 80 is on the high side. Your heart is working hard.

 

Around 9 months ago, a good friend of mine had almost identical numbers to you. The 140 / 80 being norm for him for many years. He was too scared to go to the doctor, frightened of what they might say or find. Anyway, when his BP jumped to 200 range he finally went. They found his main artery 78% blocked and within a week he had a stent put in (simple op) and that has changed his life. His BP 120/ 80 every day since and lots more energy. I am not diagnosing you but the doctors said that if he had left it much longer things would have only got worse.

 

Don't wait anymore. If your BP remains so high then pop in to see the medics. They can only help you and reassure you. That is what they are there for.

Are you using those 300 baht made in China machines from Lazada..try get a reliable one.

If you do not wish to go to a hospital then go to a clinic.

Your diastolic isn't too bad,  just relax then get seen by a medical practitioner.  As has been suggested,  have your drugs reviewed they don't seem to be helping too much

You don't have to visit a hospital, many local clinics can check your BP.

I might add that you should consider taking your own machine along as well and check the reading against theirs. As said above, your machine might just be faulty.

the obvious answer is go hospital......WHY ASK US ON HERE....we are NOT doctors, though there might be one or two....

You should always rest before having your BP taken and if you suffer from 'white coat syndrome' when entering hospital or clinic, your blood pressure will almost certainly give a false reading.

 

I don't trust home BP monitors as at times they can give you inaccurate results.

In your particular case OP with a very high reading and as others have quite rightly stated, see a doctor without delay.
