Get together

Featured Replies

Not sure how or why this could wok but does anyone want to get together for a real actual drink?

We don't have to be BFF but I like the idea of a once a week drinking gathering of different people.

Anyone up for it??

Boat Avenue,

They just arrested over 100 people in Koh Phangnan for doing just this so think i will pass for now.

Years ago TV had sponsored bbq events at many places, mostly Pattaya and some in Phuket. Best bbq this side of the Rio Grande by a talented and very welcoming TV member (Buckwheat), who sadly, passed away years back.

Nice times.

no not really.  I don't see anyone who posts here as 'friends',  or 'acquaintances', or people I would want to socialise with,  more just anonymous fellow travellers through life, in a place fairly alien to most of us. I like to keep it that way.

WOW .... that was 16 years ago, think Green Man. Last one in Phuket 15 years ago. Think on hill side Kata, funky bar. I was there.

You know. I tend to agree with that. 20 plus years ago I was a Mod on another Phuket forum and tried to organise tourist member get togethers. Was never a success. Awkward in the extreme.

Worth a try, you'll be cooking eventually!

why travel if you want to spend time with westerners? that same logic for me is the reason that in 40 + years of travelling I've never taken an organized tour with other westerners. Of course if you have no other contact with anyone else it's understandable..

I've been to two, both organised bt thaivisa. One was at the Ratri Jazztaurant in Kata, now defunct. The other was at the tennis club in Rawai. I don't remember anyone I met at Ratri, apart from a member calle ChiangMai, though George was there as was the Phuket moderator at the time, Donna. The one at the tennis club had fewer attendees and a few who obviously knew each other previously. I've spoken to a couple of the attendees since but, in all honesty, they didn't really work. Like a reunion with people you've never actually met!

I was at the Ratri as a brand new TV member.  I was disappointed that there was zero attempt for the organisers to introduce everyone. Those that knew each other just hived off into their own little groups. I remember ending up on a sofa with another member who was equally confused/isolated.  Indeed I wrote a poor review of the 'party' in a TV post.

No idea that ChiangMai was there. Mind you we lived on the same street in Patong for years and I never met him.

I know and have met & had a beer with a couple of members on here, we had a mutual interest in a couple of things so it made sense, I'm not really comfortable meeting strangers so breaking the ice with a couple of PMs or emails & then phone calls make it easier prior to meeting.

I'm happy in my own bubble or social circle mainly, so I'll pass thanks ????

It’s one of those things that can work if there’s one or more outgoing host types involved.

Prior to marriage I was a member of a riske dating site in Australia.

They had a forum with plenty of banter by the usual suspects and several get others were organised, the great thing was that they were attended by people from all over Australia and were generally very positively reviewed, which encouraged people to want to attend.

Thing to remember is though, not everyone will be the person that they project online, for good and not so good.

I’m the type who’s normally up for a yarn and I mostly enjoyed them.

So.....that's two of you, then.

Bit of a hike from Darwin Australia, but what the hell ????

Don't know about physically getting together, but would an idea be to have a Zoom general knowledge pub style quiz on a particular evening in the week. I do it regularly with my family members dotted around the world and it works well. Obviously a few house rules to be made, but what about it for a basic idea...anyone?

@MarkT63

Well done for trying!

It's a bit sad, but those on here are a little hard-baked, cynical and world-weary; too much so for friendly get-togethers.

Does Thailand do this to the happy-go-lucky traveller, after years of strife? Maybe.

????

No thank-you. Been done before and wasn't much fun.

Agreed. Sorry about throwing up in your flower bed.

Someone earlier mentioned commonality, that’s usually the key to making these meet ups work.

If youre a fit, healthy outdoors type, you may not have much to talk about with one our legendary (name your city) barstool Don Juan’s that frequent this place... and to be fair it works both ways ????

A more successful event could happen through one of the sub forum threads though, be it computing, mechanical, rural etc.

Good luck.
