7-11s and Family Marts appear to be closing in droves in the (no) tourism areas of Pattaya.

Has anyone else noticed this or am I hallucinating (again)?

I can certainly understand any and all kinds of businesses closing in this current environment, but I'm finding this rather shocking.

You know, 7-11s and Family Marts have been like Starbucks in Seattle. Everywhere!

That is what happens if you have a franchise from a company that opens a new franchise next door, as soon as you make 40K profit a month.

 

So you can't build up a reserve for lesser times as they are currently.

 

In the non tourist areas of Pattaya are living loads of Thais that are affected by the lack of tourists

Are they also closing in the non-tourist areas as well? 

These are like little everything in life centers for lots of people.

It's not "convenient" if they're not nearby anymore. 

Plus all the lost jobs for their hard working long suffering staffs. 

This is something I've just noticed in the last week or so.

No. I was being too clever by half by saying (no) tourism to indicate that there are no tourists in the tourism areas.

Centre of Bangkok is similar. Used to have about 20 within 200m from my house, now there are maybe 10 left. Admittedly probably still too many but we got lazy so if there's not one in front of your front door, it's too far. Good they offer delivery service from 30m away for these who really hate to walk.

one of my long ago ex gals told me that the reason there was always a 7 11 in so many villages is that there was no banks there and the mom and pop stores rarely had enough baht to make change...so people who needed change for a 1000 or 500 baht could always count on going to 7 and being able to get change no matter how small the purchase....probably makes sense

Whats good about 7/11 in Australia we have a total of about 600 

I only have seen 3 shops where I live and my city has a population

of nearly 2 million

In the town I grew up in there was one 7-11. But it wasn't an  everything shop like in Thailand. Main reason to go was for the slurpees and the porn magazines. (Before internet natch.)

No but that turned out to be a way to attract more customers...if you may have missed it 7 will always give you change for big bills whereas mom and pops rarely have change,

I saw a closed Starbucks too... no real surprise when anything closes in a tourist area w/o tourists... a bit of an inconvenience if you have to walk an extra half-block for a 7/11...

I've seen the same thing. Years ago I saw the Subway Sandwich near the Walking Street entry had closed and I was shocked. Those places NEVER close!

 

Now, the subject stores are shuttering their windows, and with them the associated ATM's. You're not imagining things, it's happening.

Still opening new ones in our little town. Started off with 2 ( directly opposite each other ) then another opened a year ago near the post office. Now there is a new garage opening in town with a 4th 7/11 and an Amazon.

Our little night market is booming like never before and at 5 pm is mad busy.

These are just normal adjustments to an economy that has shown a contraction of 8%, after years of steady growth, what would you expect?

 

It is also obvious that Pattaya would be first in line for bankruptcies and other business closures. Just let us hope that the authorities will step in to prevent this place to repeat the horrors of before Covid era.

Lots of customers, lots of 7/11. Fewer customers, fewer 7/11.

That makes a lot of sense.

Is it surprising ,i cant see how they keep going anyway ,we used to shop at 7/11 near us ,then another opened ,then one across the bloomin road from it ,then a family mart and a tesco , same like the coffee shop ,opened up ,next thing 3 off them ,.its stupid here .

Is where I go to break a 1000 bill......they can take away the Family Marts but I draw the line at 7-11 and doraemon stamps!!!! ????
