Makha Bucha Day expected to trigger 2.357 billion baht in spending

BANGKOK (NNT) - The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce expects about 2.357 billion baht to be circulated on this year’s Makha Bucha Day, the first contraction in six years.

The university’s Economic and Business Forecasting Center has conducted a survey of anticipated consumer behavior during Makha Bucha Day 2021 and found 48.7 percent of people foresee the holiday as being more muted than last year, due to a loss in spending power triggered by COVID-19. Another 23 percent however, believe government stimulus measures will lead to more merit-making.

The center forecasts 2.357 billion baht will circulate during the holiday, 9.38 percent down on-year from 2.667 billion baht in 2020. The figure is the lowest in the six years since 2015 and is the first downturn seen in the period with average spending expected to be about 1,311 baht per person.

The survey also found general positivity towards government stimulus measures such as the co-pay scheme and We Travel Together. Together, the co-pay scheme, the Article 33 scheme and Rao Rak Gun are believed to have added 1.76 percent to economic growth and should allow the economy in the first half to achieve overall growth of 1.5 percent, before growing 4.5 percent during the latter half. For all of 2021, economic expansion is estimated at 2.8 – 3 percent but if a potential six million tourists arrive this year following widespread vaccinations against COVID-19, the figure could reach 3 – 3.5 percent.

Wouldn't that be about the average spending of Thai's for a weekend anyway ?

"Another 23 percent however, believe government stimulus measures will lead to more merit-making"  As normal more and more money going into the Wats for merit and not where it is needed!  SAD

Impossible with a booze ban in place, I had to cancel my holiday when I found out

Just back from ferrying GF to the Wat.  Sat in the car & listened to two microphone hoggers babble excitedly non-stop for 30 minutes.  I reckon they used the word 'baht' twenty times each minute as devout Buddhists tried to buy their way to heaven by making merit.

I spent my beer money yesterday so  today they won't be getting a single satang from me.

Might go to the service station later and check the tyres on the car with the free air, pop into the 7/11 whilst Iam there is get a free temperature check.

I'm sure Lord Buddha did not have this sort of nonsense in mind!

Desperate when they have to announce things like this about how great things are going .

Quite obviously another smoke screen - do they, seriously, have nothing better to do than to produce such absolutely unimportant, irrelevant figure constructions?

Allow booze, to start with, would cook the books nicer and would also be in line with any other Buddhist country on this planet - Thailand again is the odd one out - go figure ????

Don't confuse Thai Buddhism with Buddhism!

Will Buddha be disappointed if they don't meet the target???

I have just done my own calculation, and to be precise the amount of projected spending is

2.357 Billion Baht and 74 Setang.

But is Noi from Bangkok does not go out, drop this by 200 Baht.

Is this going to be like my former gf, "Buddha day, no boom-boom"? I'm guessing the massage ladies will pray to the deity to forgive them for attending to their necessities.

another day without allowing booze sales or another top decision on their hypocrisy/hypocrite memes....they can drink as much as they want, on the Makha Bucha Day,  as long they buy the booze the day before
