Thailand's immigration chief Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang admitted yesterday that 77 foreign migrants - mostly illegals from Myanmar - had tested positive in detention facilities in Bangkok.

The detainees were mostly being held in Bang Khen though print media mentioned Laksi and Don Muang.

Investigations are also taking place at the Suan Phlu detention center where the IB has its HQ.

Immigration facilities for detainees are notorious for holding illegal immigrants in small, packed cells notes Thaivisa.

In total there are 2,000 detainees in detention centers nationwide with other checks now being carried out.

Sixty eight of those positive were from Myanmar. The others are from Laos, Cambodia and are Rohingya migrants.

No officers have been tested positive.

Sanook said that investigations are underway to see if proper Covid-19 protocols were being followed at the immigration centers.

The IB has asked for additional field hospitals to be set up to screen detainees.

Other that the economic interests involved, since the airports are essentially closed to foreigners at this time, why not level the playing field, and just close all the borders to incoming migrant workers too? If as they claim, safety is paramount, put your money where your mouth is, for a change, and do the right thing.

True. In other words, never a level playing field, under any circumstances, and never do the right thing, because it benefits the people.

I have had the misfortune of being locked up at suan phlu for 5 days, worst experience of my life (and I was not guilty of anything, you can believe that or not, doesn't matter). Words cannot explain how bad it is. There are families with children locked up there for weeks and months if not years. You get out for 1 hour per week. It is a disgusting inhumane place that should be burned to the ground and those in charge should be held accountable....TIT it will never happen.

I doubt it. The overwhelming majority of infected people are either asymptomatic or just have mild symptoms.

Just like being placed in a giant hotbox, and without proper facilities so that they are separated and spaced with the proper social distancing.  One has to wonder why they were not placed in a facility like they used in Samut Sakhon, but then these were here after illegally sneaking into the country.  Wonder what the new refugee camps will do as far as ensuring Covid stays at bay...

Unfortunately the whole country of denial has been infected from the start if only there was a vaccine instead of a tank ????

A bit off topic here, but do you ever notice when you look at photos from that long ago, you almost never see a single overweight person, Even in a large crowded photo? Obesity is one of the leading causes of death from Covid as well as so many other diseases not to mention the direct associated health hazards of being obese, But no one is allowed to talk about that or you are accused of fat shaming!!! Call it like it is, address the real issue and deal with it.
