1 day booze ban for the election

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

It's been announced (somewhere) that there will be the usual ban on alcohol for one day because of the upcoming election.

18:00 on the 27th to 18:00 on the 28th from what I can gather.

(Sigh, yes, we know. This will be "the straw that breaks the back of tourism in Pattaya". Again. Just like it is every other time, despite it never causing tourists to stay away.)

Luckily for some of us, our lives do not revolve around sitting on a bar stool every night so 1 night of not going to the bar won't kill us.

The ban is for "the election area".  Around here, where exactly is that as it's been mentioned central Pattaya is not voting but the dark side is?

Plenty of "election" areas currently in Central Patts.....if you know what I mean.

No, not anymore.  Pattaya's tourism industry is all online now.   Girls off apps and live streaming lady drinks, all from the comfort of your own home.  ????

Looks like drinks at home on Saturday evening and I will go out a little bit later on Sunday then.

Don't feed him. Like many hypocrites on here, say one thing when they puff their chests out and then when you know who they are, find out how they really spend their time.

Lol - a troll calling me a troll ? That's hilarious !

For your information troll, the last time I was in a bar was over 2 years ago. Why ? Because I have a life. When I'm not home, I'm out travelling around the country, visiting ancient historical sites and natural attractions. When I am home, I rarely go to bars (but I do go drinking with friends now and then).

In fact, in the last 6 months I've gone on 5 extended trips that have taken me to Petchaburi and Kanchanaburi in the East, to Phrae and Nan in the North and, a couple weeks ago, to Ubon and Amnat in the East. (Plus a few 1 and 2 day trips to go camping or do my annual Khao Khitchakut hike).

Out of Thailand's 76 provinces, I've visited 62 so far and hope to hit the other 14 in the next year or two (if they ever get that ferry to Songkla operating).

Plus I'm also smart enough to know how to buy alcohol and get it home so that if there is a "one day ban" I can still drink (though I rarely drink at home either).

And BTW, a lot of people here do know who I am. I've been out drinking with some of them in the past (in the days when I did spend a lot of time in bars). And even back then I knew how to survive those rare occasions when the bars where shut for a day, unlike a lot of posters on TV who complain and whine every time there's an announced ban.

Lol - someone who's been on TV for barely 2 1/2 months but thinks he knows who I am.

So is this ban nationwide? It don't seem clear to me.

Nationwide.
Though as many will tell you, in many places you will still be able to go to the local "mom and pop" to buy alcohol.

As per my post (4 up the page):

Municipal elections set for March 28th this month in Thailand, booze sales ban nearly certain

Tuesday, 2 March 2021, 18:00

Municipal elections are set to take place, including in the Banglamung/Pattaya area, on March 28th of this month.

The elections will be held at 2,472 municipalities nationwide on March 28th, from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.

(My bolding and underlining.)

I'm not positive, but I believe these elections are just for "local" officials (i.e. Mayors and city councils), not for Members of Parliament. I think some Mayors (and all Governors) are appointed by the ruling government (which is how the current Pattaya mayor ended up in that position for example).

Voting is compulsory in Thailand and there are penalties for people who don't vote. As well, you have to vote in the riding you are registered (on a tabien baan) as being in.
Which is one reason why they have an alcohol ban every time there is an election, as millions of Thais have to head to their home amphur to vote and there are enough drunk drivers on the roads as it is.

Note: it seems the penalty for not voting is limited to you being banned from becoming a Phu Yai Baan or other elected official, as well as losing your right to petition for the removal of an MP or Senator. Once you have voted again (in any local or national election), your rights are restored.

It probably is because Pattaya is a "Special Administrative Area" and while it is in Chon Buri (and Bang Lamung) it isn't under the same "authority" as them.

Like the BMA (Bangkok Metropolitan Administration). Pattaya and Bangkok are the only 2 cities under the "Special Local Government" heading.

(Although supposedly Pattaya's city council and Mayors are also supposed to be elected. You'd think they'd do that at the same time as the rest of the country.)

That fits what a mate currently in Pattaya told me.

Loudspeaker trucks promoting candidates on the darkside.

Nothing noticed in central Pattaya.

(also nothing until mid March while up here the noise terror is overwhelming)

And also I don't remember news that the "well known" major faces an election.

Seems like facts are something that escapes you ! 21/2 months  oh dear maths is not a strong topic of yours either. Also since when was not being a member precluded visitors from reading the forum ? Since I started reading it in the days of George first starting it , remember him ? it was never an exclusion. But hey , this is about municipal elections on the 28th and the law precluding the sale of alcohol on election days.  Not a post for expressing  preferences about visiting bars or not or expounding on your Thailand sight seeing activities. So just get back on topic shall we ? Like almost everywhere in Thailand's villages the local family shops never stop selling it so it is an unenforced law in most areas.  Actually the law, if you care to read it, also includes the distribution of alcohol. That is of course without definition of "distribution".

It's not Australia, as far as I'm aware voting is not compulsory, my mrs is only going home to vote because her mums sister has been on the local council for as long as I can remember + 10 years. Go figure.

No that makes sense. Where I live there are trucks going around with loudspeakers disturbing everyone promoting some guy or another, and every street corner is now blind due to posters of grinning folks seeking office. Even came across some sort of parade going down the Railway Line Bypass Rd, all wearing the same colored T-shirts. Less fuss than over in the West!

Actually it IS compulsory. I know it because I actually looked it up - before I posted. It was made compulsory as of the 2007 Constitution. Article 72 in fact.

Section 72. Every person shall have a duty to exercise his right to vote at an election.

The person who exercises his right to vote at an election or fails to attend an election for voting without notifying the reasonable cause of such failure shall be entitled to or lose the right as provided by law.

The notification of the cause of failure to attend an election and the provision of facilities for attendance thereat shall be in accordance with the provisions of the law.

http://www.asianlii.org/th/legis/const/2007/index.html

However, as I also pointed out previously, the penalty seems to be limited to not being able to run for an elected office or protesting against a MP or Senator.

The Villa at the Avenue in Pattaya had a notice up last night saying no alcohol sales till 23.59 today. Not heard of this anywhere else.

Something wrong here. Should it not be The person who DOES NOT exercise his right......................

And the penalty for not voting, is a ban from voting!   LOL
