Court orders ex-commerce minister Boonsong and associates to pay ฿14.7bn compensation over rice deal scandal

[File] Former commerce minister Boonsong Teriyaphirom

Today (Monday), Thailand’s Central Administrative Court ordered former commerce minister Boonsong Teriyaphirom, former deputy commerce minister Poom Saraphol, and three former senior commerce officials, to pay the state 14.723 billion baht in compensation, for damage caused by the non-existent government-to-government (G2G) rice deal during the administration of former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

In dismissing the five’s petition to stay the execution of an order by the Ministry of Commerce, for the five of them to pay the compensation, the court ruled that they deliberately committed irregular actions, in collusion with the private sector, to cause damage to the state, by selling rice at below market prices and by arbitrarily changing the terms of payment, which were not in line with (G2G) rice transactions.

The court also ruled that the rice, which was supposed to be exported under the G2G deal, was actually sold in the domestic market, resulting in unfair competition.

They are appealing and will continue to do so ad infinitum. 14 billion buys a lot of time and when it (time) runs out they will merely decamp to Saudi to join their leader.

Thai courts come up with some weird decisions and this is up among the most ridiculous.

It'll be several more years for the case to get through the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

Wasn't it just last week a post talked about the government doing a G2G deal with someone to bump up Thailands ailing rice exports?

What could possibly go wrong this time aroound.

Have they named and charged those responsible in the private sector?

I disagree, there were fake GTG deals (proven) and there were damages proven. So they were corrupt and now they have to pay for it. Too bad that this does not happen for all the corrupt idiots. Junta only goes after their enemies. That is morally wrong. But its not wrong to get the corruption money back from those who benefitted. The one who has to pay the most was the rice trader who assisted with this corruption.

As a professional writer I reserve the right to use question marks.

Is your question an attempt to get me to use the T-word?  Doesn't Thaksin and his clone live(d) there?  They both instigated/continued the corrupt rice mountain scheme.  The last bit isn't a question

Yes I thought you had tried to be a smart a**se .  A professional writer indeed. If you were one then   you should first find out your facts.   To educate you then Thaksin is a resident of Dubai, not Saudi.  Happy writing. I hope your publications, if you have any, are more correct in their data.

Thank you, I sit corrected.  My four published books are fiction, two of them Thai-centric.  They are easily accessible from my web-site; look me up at Wix.
