A dozen Bangkok hospitals suspend COVID-19 testing amid shortages

Wanted to get one of my kids tested today.  Called 8-9 of the obvious candidate hospitals.  Takes for ever to get a call answered.  Story the same at all locations ... getting 3,000-4,000 calls per day for Covid tests (who’s counting), the waiting list is thousands of people long, they are not adding names to the list at this point, completely out of test kits and no idea when they will have more, Covid isolation units are full.  What a mess!

Come on all you defenders of how well Thailand is doing with Covid - defend running out of tests a year after the pandemic started. Defend this pathetic planning.    Once again Thailand will

  • Yes, I agree. I saw a survey the other day where 85% of people said they wouldn't travel to an unvaccinated country, even if they were vaccinated themselves. Thailand is messing this up big time.

You are all missing the main point here in rubbishing everything the Government has done.

OK, sack the present Government is well & good, have you seen what is waiting in the wings ???

Believe me, you ain't seen nothing yet if that happened.

Biggest mistake as I see it is closing all the bars where people are doing the right thing & have now forced this undergriund.

The disaster is that PM Mr P will not make the hard decision & BAN all inter provincial  travel throughout Thailand for the next 3 weeks.

He knows that he is creating "A Super Spreader"  & is at his own admission is preparing to pick up the peices after Songkran.

Reminds me of Mr Boris in the UK who did or did not do  the same stupidity for too long

No it's not, the vaccines do in fact work so such measures would be complete nonsense.

Whether it's nonsense or not, in my opinion it's gonna happen.

Some people might think this was a cover story.

As chilli42 has discovered with the diagnosing hospitals:

"Wanted to get one of my kids tested today.  Called 8-9 of the obvious candidate hospitals................Covid isolation units are full"

Some people might think that the internmnent camps ("field hospitals") have reached capacity, and that the hospitals have been "instructed" not to find any more cases, for a while at least.

Not me of course.

You certainly have a unique way to debate on a forum ???? Have you ever done any public speaking by chance?

That is just brilliant and typical Thai thinking.

Uh, if you don't test people won't know they're sick.

The next thing I expect to hear is that the same hospitals won't allow covid patients.

Thailand better set up mass testing centers and fast!

I read today somewhere that one minister apparently was " French kissing" someone and probably catched the virus there.

What's that?

4 months ago they had testing capacity to handle Samut Sakhon outbreak (800+ per day), but now they don't have capacity for this small jump (400+ per day) ? ? ?

It beggars the question

Why has all the Money the US gave to Thailand to fight Covid, not been used to procure more test kits Etc

Many countries are not vaccinating in mass yet.  Due to the global shortage of jabs, and the HUGE demand.  Not to mention the costs.

Only those countries at the bottom of the heap ( very poor /backward) like in Africa,Iran etc are not vaccinating in significant volumes. Thailand at 0.1% vs UK 50% and UAE,Israel,Gibraltar etc.even higher than this, are the bottom of the bottom of the heap . Thailand is not a poor country,by comparison, but it is run incompetently

This country continues to be the laughing stock of the world and really shows that it’s money before everything else.

Nobody gives a rats fart about Thailand. It's a small, insignificant nation with no influence in anything on Earth, best known, if anyone does give it a thought, for prostitutes and ladyboys..

it's been like that since day 1

Why would one get tested anyway. No symptoms no test. If you have a common cold or a slight flue, the test might be positive and you get tangled in a lot of problems.

Still funny there are so little cases as according to Johns Hopkins University about 34,000 Thai die of Influenza and Pneumonia every year. Are those figures correct? Let's assume that Johns Hopkins is trustworthy, but then again they also produced in 2017 the 'Spars Pandemic 2025 - 2028' report, something that is a must read.

At least 12 hospitals in Thailand's capital, Bangkok, said as of Friday they were suspending testing for COVID-19 due to high demand and shortage of supplies, amid a new spike in cases.

No test kits and no vaccines but Prayut has a master plan.

Maybe he will share it with us at some point.

It's asked people who frequented these venues to seek out a test... NOT wait for symptoms to show.

Apparently they are trying to close alcohol production plants, so that they can turn them into vaccine production plants for the next 14 days while the bars are shut.

Unfortunately, it's now inevitable that travel to Thailand will be banned from vaccinated countries or at least hotel quarantine at ones own expense back in their home countries.

It works both ways you know, Thai tourists will now have to stump up 10 days hotel quarantine too when they visit abroad if they are declared a dangerous covid country.

No Tests, no vaccines.... "Something's fishy in Thailand".

Do they really want to stop this thing or drag it out because they love the power and control it brings to them?

I thought Thailand was supposedly no longer "3rd" world... Or is that their favorite excuse for failure and don't want to lose that nomenclature?

Thailand has had an advance agreement with AstraZeneca to secure COVID-19 vaccines for 6 months now! Where is it??? ????

I hate to say I told you so.  I have been saying Thailand would get to feel the effects of the real virus one day.  I'm distressed as it effects my fiance who now lives in a redzone and has many travel plans upcoming.  As well as visa interview in 2 + weeks.

I would imagine all  "it's just flu" and Thailand has done so well and I'm so glad I stayed in Thailand, it's the safest place, are feeling worse than me.   Vaccination was always the key.  Thailand thought they were special and now the contact tracing is no more.  It's rampant virus time now and not just poor immagrant workers this time.

Ps I've had my JJ jab 1 month ago.

I understand Thailand putting all the vaccine hope in the 1 golden coach but why ban hospital groups from procurement?  This will end in deaths.

And as things stand, too right. I can't speak for other countries but as far as the UK goes, our economy won't be hit the same as Thailands from lack of tourists, especially from the lack of Thais coming to the UK.

I can't believe that no travel bans have been imposed, just 2 words say it all - Bangkok & Songkran.

Now maybe we'll see just how effective Thailand's control measures are? Have they been good at preventing spread? Have they been 'managing' the figures? Have they just been lucky?

I've never really believed the figures but to be honest, I have no idea as to why Thailand appears to have faired better than a lot of other countries in tacking the Pandemic.  I fear we are about to find out though.

How to grab defeat from the jaws of victory! All the positive steps to avoid Covid over the last year has lead to complacency........ the vaccine approval and roll-out is too little, too late and to run out of Covid test is simply disgraceful. They have caught on the left foot yet again. Open up the borders and the country will be screwed.

So now the numbers can't be trusted...

This country can be infuriating at times.

This government could never be trusted about anything, especially about the Covid-19 infection rate. The numbers were low before because they did not test people like other Western countries did. Therefore they did not have to lie, just not test. Now they blame lack of test kits so again not testing and keep the number low. This will bite them hard if thousands get sick.
