How do I explain COVID risk?

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Just had a discussion with my Thai GF, she doesn't want to be vaccinated against COVID.

How do I explain:

1/ The risk of death from COVID is 2-4%, depending on age group.

2/ The risk of long-term health effects from COVID infection is about 30%

3/ The risk of death from vaccination is about 0.0006% according to European data.

4/ The Chinese and Russian governments are actively spreading misinformation about Western vaccines.

5/There are malign and deluded idiots everywhere who believe vaccines are the work of Satan, or an attempt to inject everyone with nanochips.

You some of them right here on this forum, ignorance is prevelenat all over.

You hardly need Chinese or Russian govts or even deluded conspiracy nut jobs to sow mistrust in Western vaccines.

The Western media is schizophrenic. One day they tell you the vaccines are safe and the following day they publish an article about bloot clots.

I know several people who don't have a conspiracy bone in their body who are worried about the vaccine, all thanks to western media.

Take a look in the mirror before pointing fingers. Westerners think their media is holier-than-communist media.

Ask your girlfriend to explain why she doesn't want a vaccine, i bet it makes no sense, see if logic wins through

Comparing risk of death of covid vs risk of death of vaccine with your statistics is not entirely accurate.

Most people have already lived through covid for an entire year without any symptoms. So the vaccine introduces a new unknown into the equation, therefore the risk of complications (arguably) increases.

Just tell her to go out without a mask and meet as many people as she can. She can then catch Covid and become a part of herd immunity or die.

I guess it's a waste of time starting any topic related to vaccines on TV. Too many people with too few brain cells.

You can ignore my opinion.

My point is this. In the past, only the lunatic fringe was warning about potential harms of vaccines. Now the mainstream media seems to be publishing, every second day, about problems with vaccines.

It could be "fake news" perhaps? Fear-mongering?

Basically, I'm saying your gf is not the only person who is afraid of the vaccines. I've met people who are not into vaccine conspiracies who are also concerned about the vaccines.

And I'm not telling you not to take it.

Does she ride a motorbike without a helmet? As far as logic comes in,there could be your answer.

Not any more, when she got fined and I refused to pay for it.

Honestly, I am not antivaxxer at all. In fact I can't wait to get the jab.

BUT, if your girlfriend doesn't really want, then so be it. Don't force it, what if you force and then something unimaginable happens and for some reason she dies, how would you feel?

Respect her decision.

And btw, medias from one side spreading misinformation about the vaccines from the other side is nothing new in either side....

Yes, for her own safety and the safety of her 89 yo father.

Why are you trying to use a rational argument with your girlfriend? Do you honestly think that proving her wrong will make her more compliant?

Just show her all the pretty girls on social media posting about getting vaccinated and she'll hop on board quicker than firs time English tourist onto a ladyboy.

What if she catches covid and dies?

Imo,the chance of dying as a direct result of the vaccination is very small.

I'd just tell her "you have a 0.15% of dying from COVID" and let her make the choice.

I don't know where you got that statistic from, it's 2-4% depending on age range in most countries.

Sure, I didn't say otherwise. Like I said, I would vaccinate right away if I had the chance.

But when it is your girlfriend specially, and not your wife. IMO you shouldn't try to interfere with such a personal decision. It's her decision after all

The risk of dying from Covid in most countries is about 1500 in a million.

The risk of dying from a vaccine is 1 in a million.

How old is your GF and does she have any health issues. There  are stats that show what risk she would be at from Covid. For anyone healthy under 60 the risk is low.

1/ The risk of death from COVID is 2-4%, depending on age group.

Source?

2/ The risk of long-term health effects from COVID infection is about 30%

Source?

3/ The risk of death from vaccination is about 0.0006% according to European data.

Do you mean these new vaccines under emergency approval?

4/ The Chinese and Russian governments are actively spreading misinformation about Western vaccines.

LOL

5/There are malign and deluded idiots everywhere who believe vaccines are the work of Satan, or an attempt to inject everyone with nanochips.

Maybe

If you believe all of the above you should listen to your gf more ????

And at that point I'm afraid your logic breaks down. Because being vaccinated does not prevent anyone from contracting Covid, it only reduces the impact. So your vaccinated G/F could still catch Covid and pass it on to her father.

Finally, some people here its just about them and its clearly not, its about passing it on to the more vulnerable, being fit and healthy does not mean you should ignore the safety and advice given and also take the vaccine.

Just goes to show just how many people with underlying conditions there are and how dangerous the virus is to them eh? I guess you must know a few people with asthma or cancer right, how about diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, overweight, pregnant women, the list just goes on.

Are you still amused?

Its highly unlikely that would happen with a decent vaccine. Its about doing what you can to reduce risk, risk can never be eliminated 100%

Ok, if you want to see it that way. Fair enough.

But don't be surprised when people around you are reticent to take the vaccine. And don't blame conspiracy folks.

Agreed, thats a risk but a worthwhile one in my opinion, I'm all for education on science which includes the good and bad.
