True on point 3 but still makes China only the 9th largest foreign investor in Australia which really doesn't fit with the narrative of China is buying all our country and are going to take over that Australia likes to perpetrate. Ironically and hypocritically all these things in Australia are for sale yet they want to choose who buys them. You can only buy something that is for sale. As much as they would like a nice American or British person to buy their <deleted> their true colours come through when an Asian wishes to purchase something

Yes I had made Thailand my home but was overseas when Covid struck. Unable to return.  my visa i held cancelled by immigration, drivers licence expired and cannot be renewed,

tax file still valid. Had to sell two properties. Still cannot return. Welcome to Thailand.

How many expats living here are renting a house or condo that is smaller and less comfortable than the one they left in their home country? Is this stepping up or stepping down? I worked hard and saved for a comfortable home and to have a better life style than the one I left but do not understand those that left the comforts of home to live in a shoe box condo (30 sq. meters) or an old house with cheap furniture and no cupboards in the kitchen to put my sundries. Buying a house as opposed to renting? If I rent a house that matches or improves my standard of living enjoyed back home will run about 30,000 baht/month or 360,000/year. If I live here for 10 years (been here almost 20 years already) that's 3,600,000 baht. A villa with pool can be had for 5 million and up. Makes sense to me to buy if you intend on retiring here for a lengthy period of time as opposed to paying rent that you will never see again.

There's not an easy answer to this.

In the UK it was cold and wet nearly all the time, so I lived inside my house (5 beds, 4 kids) nearly all the time.

In Thailand it's hot and dry nearly all the time, so I don't need so much inside space (3 beds, 2 kids).

In both locations the woman I lived with owned the home (according to the divorce judge).

 

If you include the age, weight, looks and compliance to sexual activity of the woman you live with in your 'comfortable' ratings, Thailand is stepping way up for most of us.

But I guess for some people the number of kitchen cupboards they have is an important lifestyle consideration.

I really think its the Anti Thai mindset that make people say this ..."don't buy" -"Your Mad if  you buy"  sort of stuff.

A friend that I came here with brought a condo  over 20 years ago,  and the same sort of advice was being given out then. ......10---5  years ago same advice on the internet.

 

Can anyone really say that was good advice now-- the guy who brought 10 years ago at that price -he has had 10 years rent free, (or someone paying him) & he has a condo at a 10 year ago price---

I can understand people saying don't buy at the moment---it may not be the bottom---who knows, but this never ever buy, if you intend to live here, would really be just silliness...IMO

So what happened to me last week was my thai broker asking me for my password and transaction code. I am sure he is just trying to be helpful to assist me in solving the system error that I am suffering from. However, that is definitely inappropriate. Hence I sold all my Thai shares yesterday, waiting for T+2 and moving all my money back home.

No...the real reason is the Thais in power are scared to death that foreigners would buy large amounts and/or key portions of land.....have a major impact on Thai passive culture.

Lol. Yes sexual gratification may be the lure and fine for the first year but for many the ease of picking up a Thai woman or two after a while wears off especially when you have found someone you are happy to live with long term and then you are back to reality.

If you have a Thai wife/partner then a usufruct usually mitigates this restriction and if you have Thai children as a result of your union (many do eventually) you can register the land in their name. I know of many that have this arrangement and live a life either equal or far more comfortable than back home. No need to set up bogus companies.

Nope, means I decided not to retire here. Actually was planning to buy a house, but no, I will continue to rent. Btw, thai baht is dropping as we speak.

Drivers license can either be renewed or you apply for a new one, same for visa. Not a big deal. Covid is a world wide problem and will come to an end sooner than you might think.

Some property owners have lifestyles that compel them to fly in and out very very often.

If they hold passport of visa exempt countries they should never be turned away from any Thai airport for "coming too many times". Many have given up on Thailand because of this.

Yes but that is a normal reaction to the current situation. Wait until most people have had their vaccinations and then it will reverse once again.
