Dear all,

I would like to buy a second hand car in bangkok or surrounding area (Pattaya, Hua Hin).

I visited few dealers (tents) but it's seems difficult to me to trust the dealers. Especially about the mileage they display, I heard it's very common here to fiddle the odometer.

Do you have any recommendation of honnest dealers / dealers who give serious warranties on the vehicule?

Thank a lot for your precious advises.

Thank you for the proposition. Unfortunately it's way over my budget. I'm looking for something around 300k...

About a year ago I bought car for 400 000 Baht.

I also read horrible things about tents on the internet. I was worried. I visited about 20 different tents and found all of them OK. No scams, lies, no problems at all in any of them. I was very happy at the end. And I'm to this moment. I think negative opinions on the internet are greatly exaggerated and you have nothing to worry about.

I would be very careful about buying used without service records or a full inspection by a trained mechanic.  Many here with vehicles do not simply have the money or the motivation to properly maintain the vehicles particularly if they are only used for short hauls.  Caveat emptor.

The auctions are usually a good place to look---especially now as the 2nd hand dealers wont be bidding so much, you will need a Thai with you as they speak so fast--- you must place a returnable 10K if you are going to bid. If the car is just for you --then you will pick up a manual quite cheap--most Thais keep away from them.

Yup - like the songthaew I hired to take me to the Superhighway

730,000 km - all original

Best get of the "Thai people do not do maintenance" train

No different from any other country, then.

He said that he's looking for honest dealers who will give a warranty, he'll find neither at any auction.

if it is a newish vehicle the real odometer is recorded on the vehicle body control module.

Tell the tent you ant to take it to a dealer and have it checked over.

I doubt they would allow that. Another idea is to get a qualified mechanic to go with the OP to look over the car. A scan with an obd diagnostic tool is in order. Or use Testcar, that will inspect used cars for a fee.

I wouldn;t worry about the mileage so much. I'd be more concerned whether the car has had a severe accident and been rebuilt, or badly flooded and not fixed properly. Then a sensor check is in order, as they are expensive to replace.

For 300K there would be plenty of decent b-segment and eco cars around. Or an older civic/altis.
