BANGKOK (Reuters) - A royal academy chaired by Princess Chulabhorn, the youngest sibling of Thailand's king, on Friday said it would import 1 million doses of Sinopharm's COVID-19 vaccine next month, after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorised its use.

"We want to help plug in the gaps for business, schools, so they can move forward," Nithi Mahanonda, secretary-general of the Chulabhorn Royal Academy told a news briefing.

Earlier this week, the academy announced it would import "alternative vaccines" to supplement the government campaign.

The government's chaotic and widely criticised mass vaccinations programme is due to start next month, using mainly AstraZeneca vaccines made locally by Siam Bioscience, a company owned by King Maha Vajiralongkorn.

The government says it will have 6 million AstraZenaca doses and 3 million Sinovac doses available in June.

The FDA on Friday approved the Sinopharm coronavirus vaccine for emergency use, making it the fifth authorised by Thailand after AstraZenaca, Sinovac's CoronaVac, Johnson & Johnson's Janssen and Moderna.

The royal academy procurement comes after Thailand was hit by its worst COVID-19 outbreak so far, with over 80% of its 144,976 cases and 954 deaths occurring in the past two months, driven by the highly transmissible B.1.1.7 variant first detected in Britain.

Just a over 1 million of Thailand's more than 66 million people are fully vaccinated.

The announcement in the official Royal Gazette susprised some members of the government, which had until now insisted on being the sole importer of COVID-19 vaccines.

Nithi said other organisations would be able to buy from the academy's 1 million Sinopharm doses, adding that it did not seek profit.

The Federation of Thai Industries and the energy firm PTT Group Pcl have shown interest as potential buyers and the academy would continue to negotiate for more doses after June based on demand, Nithi said.

Happy days, ask the Seychelles what they think about this "witch doctors" brew!!!

Maybe it's an experiment/research, to test for efficacy and side-effects.

Seems a bit slap-dash, but with no real plan or vaccines, why not roll the dice.

Ask the Seychelles about what....there is nothing clear yet there.

"Still, more answers are needed. The government hasn’t disclosed what vaccine was administered in the breakthrough cases that make up a third of the total count. No agency has done any genomic sequencing to determine which variant is dominant on the islands, though the one first identified in South Africa, B.1.351, was detected in Seychelles in February."

57% Sinopharm, 43% AstraZeneca...the South African variant in circulation. The results will be interesting.

However what is more important is this:

"What’s also apparent, so far, is that though there’s been a surge in cases in Seychelles, very few people are getting seriously ill. “We have only a few people needing intensive care. Two out of 40” in hospitals, said Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan in a May 10 interview. “The vaccine will protect people from getting serious symptoms.”"

More bowing down to the makers of the gift that keeps on mutating and giving. I am so disappointed in their decision to support them and also for this to be fast tracked for where Modena and Pfizer should be put on the number one priority list. Sputnik is supposedly good but then It just supports another commie dictator based regime. So sad in a sense.

What a freaking mess.

The bad news is that this million doses is mostly symbolic, able to provide some photo ops, but not much more.

But as a symbol, it does show that the current official vaccination program is weak. If only there were more organizations capable of independent procurement of vaccines.

More than symbolic only. It has set a justifiable precedent in defying "control" of vaccine options and/or supply. There is nothing in that that removes verification of standards .

It also does not eliminate the basic problem of a shortage of  available supply.

Maybe it could be tried on prisoners, given the virus' massive outbreak in Thai jails?

This is a bit confusing.

No clue why there isn't any clarity or transparency on this?

This could be spun into a massively positive development.

Instead it's a bit shrouded and open to interpretation.

When I read carefully this article I can't find anything definitive there. It "seeks" to procure, but there is no confirmation that the vaccines are paid, or when they are going to be delivered.

Currently there are delivery delays of any type of vaccine in many countries.

I know someone who had the Sinopharm and then got Covid, but a very mild case and only a couple of days at home.. So yes the Sinopharm and even Sinovac are somewhat effective, just they are chinese and not the gold standard. Will I take either of them. no. But that is because at some point I need to travel and the chinese vaccines are not recognised by most western countries. So would be either quarantine or another vaccine, and there has been no research to indicate it is safe to mix vaccines.

The funny part about this was the announcement appeared in the royal gazette to satisfy some legal requirement. Apparently neither the covid czar or A Nut in knew it was coming, but they cannot say anything as that will be Lesse Majeste, the very same article they have been using to supress any questioning of the current rollout. Karma, lol.

Cheers

So, why couldn't the government procure this?  And much sooner?  I was going to say 'feet dragging' but to drag your feet they first have to be moving.

Simple: TIT. Seems no-one is giving a bung to do it. So they don't.

To me like the tax payer buys the vaccine, it is then sold it to state institutions (tax payer funded) for a profit. Tax payers will pay twice and a few people working for PTT will get their jabs courtesy of tax payer whilst the rest of the tax paying population have to wait.
