House speaker rejects MP contribution to COVID fund, saying not being corrupt is good enough

Thailand’s House Speaker Chuan Leekpai has rebuffed a suggestion that all members of parliament donate part of their salaries to a COVID-19 assistance fund, saying that it will be good enough if the MPs are not involved in corruption.

He also told some parliamentary officials, who have complained about having to report to work despite the spread of COVID-19 infections, that most of them have been working from home and have only been asked to work in parliament three days a week, when there are parliamentary meetings.

He said that he understands that some of them work hard and are tired when there were meetings but added, however, that they should count themselves more fortunate than a lot of people, who don’t have salaries, while the officials have job security and still get paid.

If I were an MP, I'd rather donate 5% of my paltry salary (for a month) rather than giving up the whole under the table cash flow.

Kool Aid? Antifreeze? Absinthe? Or just plain old Mae Khong (the ‘whisky’, not the river)? Drinking enough of any of those will drive someone crazy.

Because he (Chuan) was an honest politician and the poorest prime minister the country ever had, he looks for the good in people unfortunately.

They are beyond redemption Mr. Speaker!

Never mind that his government was toppled due to corruption in the 90's mostly thanks to a certain guy that nobody will remember called Suthep Thuagsuban.

Or that his brother Raluek Leekpai embezzled billions from a Thai bank, did a runner abroad and came back Scot free after the statue of limitations expired.

I remember him, Suthep, he was responsible for all the street protests that lead to these arssholes being in power that we have now. The PDRC or something.

I didn't know about Chuan's brother but we only need to look at the antics of the current leaders brother!

No need to donate. Just take 5% less from the trough at feeding time......
