My British Friend has just died

Featured Replies

I am seeking advice.

My friend -of many years -has died in Pattaya

He has left no will and no arrangements .He rented a condo.

Apart from a very old motor scooter he has  left no assets with title.

To date I have sent an email to his family who are  based in the UK

I believe that he  has left 800,000 baht in his  Thai  bank account -Visa money.

i do not know any bank details.

The body is currently at Banglamung government hospital.

Given these foregoing circumstances what is likely to happen next?

Will be up to his family, but someone will need to organise a funeral fairly soon. At a local Wat?

My condolences for your loss.

Contact the embassy, and they will then work with the family and Thai authorities to wind matters up.

Sad thing is even though he's dead the bank will probably carry on charging him for his bank ATM card !

I hate to say it but if the average lifespan of Thailand retiree was an amazing 30 years, it means 3.3% of retirees die every year on average. Since no more retirees are realistically being added to the expat community during covid times, if this craziness continues for another year or so, the expat community could well be down near 10% by the end of next year simply by yearly deaths - that also will have a knock on effect

I don't have any advice but just wanted to say sorry for your loss.

Same; call consular services at embassy with full name and passport number at hand if you have those.
My sympathy with your loss.

Without a will there's a good chance the 800k in the bank will just go to the govt. Better to use the 800k the nearer to death you get.

Maybe post his name and photo, some of us might of known him, or seen him about

Just an update

It turns out that my friend knew that he was about to die.

So he transferred all his money  to a female Thai (non sexual) friend.

Now she takes care of everything.

I contacted the British Consular service in Bangkok .

I simply gave them his passport details.

They were satisfied with this input of data.

So all's well that ends well-as they say.

My friend had just gone 77

@Delight

If there is no will, I believe the 800k will be split equally with his immediate family if he has one.

If not , then his siblings will get his inheritance.

Just tell the family to contact the bank and see what procedures to take to withdraw the money but they must provide proofs of family relationship to the owner of the bank account.

Sorry for your loss but also happy to see he donated the funds to a worthy cause,

God only knows where that 800k could have ended up, better I dont say anything
