Crime Hotel Booking Scam Suspect Arrested in Online Fraud Crackdown
Picture courtesy of Daily News. In a joint operation, investigators from Police Region 1 and Region 2 arrested a woman accused of orchestrating an online scam involving fake hotel bookings and fraudulent services. The arrest follows a sustained investigation into a rising wave of digital fraud targeting Thai citizens across the country. The suspect, identified only as Ms. Siriporn or “Iew”, was apprehended at a condominium car park in the Pak Kret district of Nonthaburi Province. She was wanted under an arrest warrant issued by the Nonthaburi Provincial Court (Warrant No. จ.995/2568) on charges of public fraud, violating the Computer Crime Act and breaching the Cybersecurity Act. According to police, the suspect ran a sophisticated operation by posting fake advertisements online for hotel bookings, accommodation deals and various services. Victims were tricked into transferring money to mule accounts which were regularly changed to avoid detection. During the arrest, police seized the suspect’s mobile phone and the SIM card used in the scheme. This arrest is part of a broader crackdown on digital scams in Thailand, which authorities report now occur at a rate of around 1,000 cases per day. Notably, 50% of these cases are committed by Thai nationals defrauding fellow citizens through low-value scams that cumulatively cause significant social and economic harm. Investigators were able to link Ms. Siriporn’s activities to at least 20 additional cases through the Police Online reporting system. As a result, eight suspicious bank accounts have been frozen pending further investigation. Police have vowed to continue expanding their investigation, targeting local fraud networks and working proactively to prevent similar scams. The operation aims to restore public confidence and reduce the incidence of online fraud nationwide. Adapted by Asean Now from Daily News 2025-08-07 -
